Personally would go to ACOM. You aren’t going to be living at home if you go to the Texas school so won’t be saving any money there. I have friends that went to ACOM and spoke highly of it and matched very well.Hello,
I am having a hard time choosing between UIWSOM and ACOM. I am a Texas resident and live about 3 hours from UIWSOM and have already paid the $1500 deposit to attend there. My parents will be close, my best friend lives in the city, and its a P/F system. the downsides are I will be competing for residency spots against 15 other Texas medical schools.
ACOM is on a letter grade grading system, and is about 13 hours from home. But it is a much more established program, better residency match rates, and has an optional DO/MBA program that I have been eyeing. The deposit is 2000, and I have to make a decision by Feb 15. BUT match day for Texas medical schools is March 5, and I am waiting to hear back from Sam Houston COM.
So my question is which school should I attend if I get into Sam Houston? and also if I don't get into Sam Houston. So maybe a ranked list would be best for me?
Thank you
EDIT: The specialties I am interested in are not very competitive, and I am interested in staying and practicing in Texas after medical school. Does this change anyone's answers?
Personally, I think letter grading is better since it makes you study harder to get the best grade you can get rather than just passing. This (IMO) leads to you retaining more which helps with boards. This is my opinion though and maybe it’s different for someone wanting to go into less competitive specialties and doesn’t need a super high board score.
