I have a friend that is interested in this information. Considering that my friend is going to be starting Ross in few months, he wants to transfer after 2nd year of Ross. I thought by posting in this forum, I can get better feedback. Thank you for the information. 👍

Most schools don't accept transfers from anything other than LCME schools, and even then, its difficult. Also, this should be in pre-allo or allo, not the class threads forum.

He told me that he talked to some LCME med schools and they told him that they do accept transfers from carribbean schools. However, you must have really high board scores and grades. There some ross students that transfer last year to LCME schools. what do u all think about this 😕

Opps, I started a thread in the wrong forum. I meant to start it in Allopathic forum, I didnt know that there was a subforum in Allopathic. Man SDN is changing rapidly. I need to get on more often. Anyways, Moderators can you transfer this thread to the Allopathic forum.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Yes, there are some (very few) LCME schools that will consider Caribbean transfers, and yes, it should be clear that for anyone to transfer for any reason, they have to have very high credentials and probably a better reason for transferring than "I don't want to graduate off shore."

What specifically would you like to know? I doubt anyone has a list of schools that take Caribbean transfers, but maybe if someone does, they could post that.

I could be wrong, but I have heard of transfers from DO/Carib schools to US allopathic schools for family reasons, such as your fiance attends that school and you want to be near her/him etc.

I'll move it to the main Allopathic forum. But this has actually been discussed in the Caribbean forum.

There are about twenty or so US MD schools that do accept transfer students from foreign medical schools. Some of this information can be found on the AAMC website and in some cases you will have to contact the schools to find out.

Usually you need a valid reason to transfer (e.g., extenuating circumstances). Some schools are not as strict about this and reasons such as wanting to go into academic medicine or a highly competitive specialty may be sufficient. In addition, openings for transfer students from foreign medical schools is often dependent on attrition at these medical schools. It's not uncommon for some of the LCME schools that accept foreign transfers to not have any open positions in a given year. For example, Chicago Medical School, Drexel, George Washington and some other schools accept foreign transfers, but have few if any openings. Most medical schools accepting foreign transfers take transfer students into the third year, not the second year.

I know that an AUC student recently transferred to an LCME-accredited public med school this year. Some first-year Ross students were recent accepted at another med school and will begin as second-year students. A lot of SGU students are applying to another US MD school that has a whopping 20 openings this year (this is practically unheard of).

Transferring to a US MD school from the Caribbean IS possible, but it is highly unlikely. Anyone going down to the Caribbean with high hopes of transferring back to a US MD school will likely be in for a huge disappointment.

Going to Ross with the intention of transferring out is not a good idea. Choose to go to Ross only if you'd be happy to graduate from the school. If they are so sure of their ability to have high board scores and a high GPA then I'd apply to U.S. schools again. Ross is not a stepping stone to attending a U.S. school. It can provide you a chance to become a doctor.

One word of caution...Ross does not make it easy to even try this. You have to take Step I before applying to U.S. schools and Ross will not allow you to sit for the test until you have completed the 5th semester in Miami. Since you are on the island for 16 months, then go to Miami, just getting done at the right time to then start applying to U.S. schools is hard.

It happens but in my opinion is more trouble than just applying to U.S. schools again.

Two accredited US allo schools that I know accept transfers from foreign med schools are Ponce and NYMC. Visit their websites or call them directly for more info.

GWU takes carribeans, i had one in my class who transfered last year.
Also it is near impossible to transfer if you are required to take your step1 score before they accept you. By the time your done yoru 2nd year or its equivlent, and take the test it would probably be time for your new school to start rotations. It is a nearly imposbile feat unless yout ake a year off. And why would htis be for your "friend" why doesnt the " friend " just post. i alwasy thought people who said they were posting for a freind was lame

he doesnt post on SDN because he feels that SDN is not reliable with thier information. However I DO attest what he believes. thanks every one for the response

what difference does it make?? just graduated and get ur letters and move on... no one cares what medical school you came from, they know that the graduate education is what will make you a good doctor or not..
