Hello.

I am a sophomore, and my college offers a BA in Biochemistry, BS in Biochemistry, and BA in Biological Sciences. I am considering whether I should try to receive a degree in "Biochemistry" or in "Biological Sciences."

A BA in Biological Sciences has a fewer number of required classes. And in my opinion, the required ones for Biological Sciences are easier than the classes required for a Biochemistry degree; Biological Sciences requires more ecology/environmental-related classes, whereas Biochemistry requires more cell-bio-related classes.

I think I can receive a higher gpa and easily graduate on time if I go for a Biological Sciences degree.... Also, I can probably take more of the dental-school-recommended classes on the side since the required classes for Biological Sciences are not that demanding. Whether I choose Biochemistry or Biological Sciences... does it matter during the dental-school-application process?

btw, I have taken the basic science courses (physics, general chemistry, organic chemistry, etc.) already.

Thank you! 🙂

I am a Biochemistry major right now and other than the rigor of the program likely helping me learn time management skills i need for dental school I feel like i'm just doing a lot of thankless hard work for no reason

i also had a real struggle with my GPA because at my school our Biochemistry degree is 84 credits and we have a bunch of required 'general education' courses as well so I have (aside from this semester-my last) never taken less than 17 credits a semester, 12 of which are usually biochem ones.

so if you just want what will make you do well i would do the easier one, but i honestly do love biochemistry and what i am learning

There goes your answer right there.... Besides, it doesn't matter what you major in, as long as the GPA is high, thats all that matters

Solid GPAs (oGPA/sGPA/BCP) are more important than major you choose. :meanie:

Yep.. go for the science major that will give you the highest gpa. The grad schools aren't really going to care which specific science major you took - they are gonna look at your gpa first
