Hey guys,
I'm debating on what to major in for my undergrad before dental school and I'm pretty set on majoring in some type of science. First off, any suggestions? Are there any science majors you personally recommend or suggest? Are there certain science majors that are easier than others? I like chemistry and I'm really good at it, but that's about as far as my person input goes, so I'm open up to all suggestions. How hard would it be to major in biochem? Thank you. :diebanana:

I wouldn't do chemistry because of pchem. Biochem needs pchem at my school too. i stuck with bio. if you're above average, like chemistry a lot, think you'll get a better gpa with chem over bio, then major in chem.

I'm with @sgv on this. I know a lot of people who love chem and absolutely hate the pchem sequence. Biochem is a tough one because you have to take a few upper level bio (which is not a big deal) and pchem+biochem sequences (with labs)+pity+. I'd suggest doing a standard bio major first, and if you still very much enjoy chem classes you can always change your major anytime you want in college.

if you're gonna major in chem, you have to be good at math too cuz pchem has a shiet ton of math.

Need that calc3 doe. Them partial derivatives.

Cell and/or Molecular or Physiology related = fun if you like to understand, learn mechanisms.
Microbio = addition to the majors mentioned above, challenge yourself memorizing different types of microorganisms/pathogens and how they cause disease/ how microorganisms are applied in daily life/technology.
Ecology/evolution related = plants, animals, enjoy observing organisms for long hours and try to make sense out of the data collected.

You like chemistry? Chem and Biochem are difficult mainly because of what people mentioned above. I would recommend starting your biology coursework/chem coursework and see how you do. Microbio is extremely interesting to me and that's a good option as well. There's also Nutritional Sciences major most likely at your school which is another option. At the Dental School I'm looking into, there is a BS/DMD program which offers a Nutritional Sciences Bachelors with the DMD. I had friends who majored in Biochem and they didn't really like it all that much. One was actually kicked out of my university (he was a doobie head tho so makes sense…) lol sorry for rambling

I wanted to say Biochem, but the posts here about pchem made me back down. I have no idea how difficult pchem classes are, but I guess I'll lose part of my soul while talking it.

Ultimately, major in a subject that you like more than any other subject. you can major in English and take all the pre-reqs and be just as competitive (or even more competitive) than those with the typically bio/chem majors.

I double majored in chemistry and religion because I truly loved both majors. I didn't major in chemistry because I "should" and I happened to love advanced organic and pchem. Remember that you only have one chance to go through college and it's really your one chance to take classes that fulfill you intellectually and personally.

I always want to get a plug in for Computer Science in these threads, but I never have time to properly address the skepticism that usually arises when I mention it in real life. Just don't nix it out of hand, or avoid it because it's not a natural science, if you have the least bit of curiosity about the subject.

I wouldn't avoid a major (biochem) just because of one silly class (pchem.) I got a degree in biochem and loved it. I've always loved chemistry but I think biology is really interesting too so it was a perfect fit for me. My college had a specific pchem class for biochem majors and it really wasn't that bad. Plus, your job prospects are probably a bit better with biochem than say biology if dental school doesn't work out.
