Hello SDN!

I'm currently rearranging my spreadsheet of the classes I plan to take, and I was wondering what would be the best order in which to take Anatomy and Physiology and Biochemistry. I would imagine these two courses compliment each other, but that there is probably an order in taking them that would make one reinforce and/or elucidate the other better than another order.

To those that have taken both, which would you recommend that I take first?

Thank you! 😀

doesn't really matter. depending on the specific courses, they may only tangentially relate to eachother. take them in the order that will give you the best schedule

Not much overlap so either is fine
These were my favorite undergrad classes so enjoy

I don't think it really matters.... But I took biochem and then physiology and then anatomy. Learning about metabolism in biochem helped me understand/appreciate stomach, intestine, liver, etc. function a little bit more. But it's not like the physiology class covered biochem things, so it really doesn't matter. Think about whichever fits into your schedule best (no 8 AM classes). They're all cool classes!

In my opinion, biochemistry first. It will help you appreciate the body and relate organs functions in physiology.

I loved biochemistry, so a little bias.

I agree with the majority, especially at the introductory level, physiology can be taken before biochemistry so order doesn't matter. I might feel differently if you were taking an advanced graduate level course.

I took A&P first, but I don't think it really matters.

Depends on the course content. In all honesty, there's probably not a logical continuity of subject matter to guide your decision. That is, you could probably take the two courses in either order and get a lot out of it (as a matter of fact, medical school curricula differ in their order of presentation of biochemistry, A&P, etc.). I imagine biochemistry would give you more fundamental information than A&P, but it really depends on the focus of each course at your school... Can you give a brief outline (e.g., from a course catalog) of each, OP?

Bias: Biochemistry major & I didn't take A&P in college.

Adding a question to this, pre-medical students don't need to take A&P correct ? Since many of you seem to have took it....

It's not required, but I personally think physiology is useful for the MCAT.

The practical answer is that you could study them in either sequence. But look at it this way...biochemistry doesn't really
require any knowledge of anatomy and physiology, but the reverse is not true.
