This just got announced! It has everything i want. Pops out to be tablet, core i7, wacom active digitizer and pen, 10 hours batt life with dock, 8gb ram, 250 gb ssd hard drive!!!!

only downside it costs $1500....

An android tablet/phone can do more than an iPad/iPhone, but the downside is that there is much more fragmentation, variation, and instability with android.

I dont think people get what all the iPad can do.

All the stuff I bolded, that you listed as Android only, the iPad can do em.


It doesn't do physical drives out of the box, but you can mod them very easily to accept SD and USB drives...its just that most people would rather blue tooth files, email them, or other wireless transfer.


So, I don't think that Android even matches the functionality of iPad yet. I guess you can customize the Android more? But Im not sure what REAL, useful, thing you can do with Android that would make it better than iPad.



Things can change, but, as of now...Android is just cheaper. I dont think they really do more...at least nothing too useful.



(but I got love for Ravizz even if I dont have love for Android)

The mini is great!

much better size...I can tell the resolution diff, but it doesnt kill me. Its also a bit more glare prone, but again, not a deal breaker. Its also lighter than the small kindle! I like it.

Lol I got love for you too man. You helped me with my PS revisions.

Idk how much iOS changed, I used to have an iPad 1 and to annotate PDFs you had to open the annotation software and use the browser within that to download the files. Also I remember having to use iTunes to add epub and PDF books into the book reader app.

These may have changed since, I would appreciate if you can clarify for me, as my future med school might be giving out iPads to incoming class! So I will need to get used to iOS.

Also recently I was putting movies on my dad's iPhone and had to convert them to MP4 (most movies I torrent in mkv or avi). While android plays all those formats.

Also I admit I get super annoyed with apple and their proprietary connectors, I like my HDMI out on my tablet, the cables are cheap and no small adapter. Also my main thing I hate is iTunes, I very much prefer drag n drop, but I heard the new iOS has wireless sync now? That will ease the blow.

I've found myself wanting a tablet, just because it would be cool to have something with a touch screen that is bigger than a phone and lighter than a laptop. But I also want a laptop for the functionality. But I also want something small like the ipad mini.

I'm incredibly indecisive and if nothing changes between now and the time my loan disbursement comes in, I will be buying a new laptop, ipad, and ipad mini at which point I will immediately be struck down by the most intense buyer's remorse ever.

Not to hijack the thread, but is downloading music/movies using peer-to-peer network still legal? I've recently heard of some legal charges against some of the students at my public state university, who downloaded copyrighted material using Torrent.

Any comments on how legal to use Torrent to download music/movies at home?

Not legal. But very rarely do ppl get caught. Most ISP send warning notice or throttle if u get caught.

That guy was using a university internet networkwhile torrenting that's why he got caught. When I lived in on campus dorms we weren't allowed either.

MBP too heavy. If I wanted a heavy laptop I'd just keep the perfectly good one I am using right now.

I read these threads and I guess I just get confused to be honest. I don't really get why you need so many different devices. I understand the argument that you can't get by totally on a tablet but carrying a laptop all the time would be cumbersome. But honestly what do you really do in medical school that requires a new laptop? I mean do you do a bunch of writing and need something with a ton of power? Maybe I have it wrong but it seems like (from what I've seen) that a lot of your medical school coursework is looking at powerpoints, studying, annotating pdfs, reading, doing labs, etc. Is there a whole lot of writing as far as writing essays or anything like that? It seems to me the majority of work would be fine to do on a tablet as opposed to laptop. I understand the size thing, but honestly since getting my tablet I don't use my laptop as much. I'm using it now to type, but that's also because I don't have a keyboard for my tablet yet and I'm laying down.

And another thing, why is it so essential to have a tablet for clinical rotations? Is it more to be able to look up medications and doses and procedures on epocrates and medscape? Or is along the lines of being able to use internet in your down time? Honestly I think I would be hard pressed to get a 7 inch tablet just for rotations. Why not just get a larger phone since the apps are available? Something like the Samsung S2 or 3 or the Note 1 or 2 I imagine would be fine to look up something quick right? I mean it's not like you're reading a novel yeah?

So honestly if I were you I would just get the tablet you want and stick with your laptop. Wait til third year to see about a "more portable" tablet because who knows what the price or what will be out in that amount of time.

Then just get the tablet you want for lectures. I personally wouldn't worry about buying a brand new laptop let alone a MBP. Aren't MBP's used for like heavy digital editing and stuff like that? I don't get why there are kids in my chem lecture that have them only to drag them to class just to be on facebook. It's one thing if the Mac has something that you really want or need, but to just get it to get is in my opinion a waste.

My current internal struggle. I need a new laptop (mine is very old) but would also like a tablet... would also like a smart phone (I'm not hip with the smart phones yet). But I feel it may be a little excessive to buy a MBA, ipad, and iphone.
Any thoughts on a smart phone being a must have in med school?

Games on smartphones are pretty cool for boring lectures. Medical apps, too.

I don't know about med school, but let me tell you about my experience in life in general.

I broke my iphone 4 a couple months before the iphone 5 was coming out...so I opted to wait to use my upgrade for the 5 instead of replacing with a 4S. In the meantime I resorted to a non smart phone... let me tell you, it made me realize how much I actually utilize the smart phone when I had it. Kind of sad actually. It was seriously liberating during the few months I didn't have one. However, I got the 5 right when it came out and am now a smart phone zombie again.:naughty:

Haha! I went through the same withdrawal. I was in between smartphones and had a go-phone for a month or two... going from internet and apps to just being able to make/receive calls and text message was very sobering. But, now I'm back and don't care because if anything happens to my current smartphone I have a back-up 4G phone that I can always reactivate. I'm all set 😎

I got the 13" MBP Retina with 256 hard drive. It was only 100$ more for the 15"(after edu discount) and that has a stand alone video card and a nicer processor. I thought the current 13" retina is incredibly light, others think its not?

My reasoning to get 13 over 15 was the size issue. My old MBP from 2008 was a 15" and it was huge, but they are so much smaller now, especially the retina line.

Anyone think I should return and spend the extra 100$ for the better 15"?

I prefer smaller bc less weight to carry around. If you find the screen to be too tiny then get the 15.

I like my 15" MBP retina just fine. If you think you will need the bigger screen, extra HD space or disc speed, then I think it's worth it.
 
If I get a new laptop it will be an ultrabook or mba.

Does a 1.5ish-pound difference mean that much to you? Or is there something else about the MBA that appeals to you vs the MBP?

The weight and also the thickness is important to me. Also I've read that MBAs are quieter.

lol the noise is only a complaint for the non-retina MBP. My MBP retina is silent. The thickness is negligible if you ask me.

How much does an 8GB 13" RMBP cost?

Edit: nvm just checked. $400 more for a better processor that I don't need and a display that I have can't tell is any better. Not worth it for me.

To each his own for sure.

My take on the Retina display has been very positive. I was very skeptical too, but opted for the retina ipad and retina macbook. Its wayyy easier on my eyes. I usually where glasses for computer screens, probably has to do with that.

Edit: I feel fine using the retina displays without glasses

The retina display helps my eyes, as well.
 
Thinking of getting a 13' Retina MBP... hate the resolution on the most of the other Windows PCs... 1366 * 768.

Anyone planning on using their tablet as a remote desktop by any chance?

Yeah I was gonna say, I saw a very noticeable difference between my wife's iPhone 4 and my 3GS.

MedPR, you gotta do a better job next time you are selecting photos from teh internetz, unless you're trolling. If that's the case, well played sir. :naughty:

Sorry it took a bit for me to get back here...not on SDN as much anymore for whatever reason.

Ill try to answer you from general to specific:

Your main hate, iTunes, has come a long way. Even if you didn't just use iCloud to wirelessly sync and upload any new content (which is the best way), you can drag and drop like you prefer. Drag and drop works with any media...music, pics, movies...etc.

As for books...you can use iBooks, Nook or Kindle app. So, the iPad has the same functionality of nook or kindle, but then also adds iBooks. Sometimes people think iBooks is the only app, but its just Apples app. That being said, iBooks has accept ePub (as a format) for a while now, so youre good to go there as well.

For movie formats, you need mp4 for the native app, but there are several apps that play any type of movie file. They work just like DivX or VLC does on a computer. For me, to keep it all homogeneous, i just use handbrake (a free computer app) and convert all my movies to mp4 anyway. But, iPad can run the other stuff if you really dont want to convert.


So, you can see that iPad does pretty much everything...and as for connectors, the adaptor is the only way to physically connect. But thats so old school anyways 😉 theres usually a computer already connected so just email the item to yourself and play it from anywhere.

+1...i really stick with the 13 unless you really hate the smaller screen. most people only get the 15 in if they plan on video gaming, video editing

OK one more question. Can I just load an epub straight onto iPad? Or I have to put it on computer then use iTunes to transfer it. That was my biggest annoyance when I had the iPad 1.

...no prob.

I can understand why you had such troubles, you had the iPad one...the pioneer! (so did I 😉 ) and back then, the world was just getting into tablets. It was all flash and no html5, webpages were slow and heavy, etc.

Now, things are much different. Like, downloading ePub books. You used to have to download to a computer, convert formats and then upload through iTunes (or blackberry, or whatever else you were using)

Now, you can just browse epub book download for iPad (usually just google the book you want and add ipad download, and it will give you a link that you can click and the iPad downloads it automatically. Nothing to learn really, except just to search for it.

As far as the video formats...most people loved the VLC app, but it got pulled. I have it still, and you can find it for download if you are savvy enough with file sharing...but AVplayerHD does the job too. There are probably a dozen others, but thats the one I know.


Anyway, iPads/iOS are made now so that you never need a computer for anything. So, if you are trying to do something, and you think you need a computer for it...you don't! 🙂
