Which will be the first DO school to get on the free tuition train?

Nothing like the OMM department taking precious time out of the required classes to repeatedly tell you how much money you are ALLOWED to bill patients for OMT procedures.

Really makes you feel like you're a chiropractor.
More than anything else, this was a comment that particularly put me off from my OMM faculty. I'm not a huge "every little thing we do contributes to the system" guy but at some point this excessive OMM billing adds to the total cost of healthcare that makes all of our insurance premiums go up too. Don't brag about how treating 3 levels in 5 minutes billed $295 or whatever because you essentially gave the patient a massage that they "need" every 3 weeks. It just gave me pause.

Do you see a DO school offering free tuition in the future?
Nope. We simply don't have the endowments. NYU received a gift of $600 million from the founder of Home Depot to fund it's free rides. Kaiser is, well, Kaiser.

Do you think DO schools will ever do anything to combat these ridiculous prices? I laughed when I saw some of the scholarships my school offers. I’m glad they have them, but $1,000 is a drop in the bucket compared the $200,000.00 I’ll be looking at.

Only by getting good at fundraising. Don't hold your breath. I'm disgusted by how bad my own school is at it.

Okay, love all the jokes... BUT! In all seriousness, IF any DO school were to do this... It'd have to be one that is very wealthy and has a large research university attached to it IMO. Therefore, I think OUHCOM would be one of the very few potentially able to actually pay for tuition free- but, it would only be offered to Ohio residents most likely, and especially only for those who sign away to work the next 10-15 years in Ohio after residency. (That's what they wanted me to sign if I got accepted and they didn't meet their Ohio-native student quota - I had to promise to practice in Ohio for 4 years post residency)

I can't see any taxpayer in any state agreeing to make medical school tuition-free.

Ohio doesnt have enough money to fix its roads, I doubt it is going to pay for free tuition over the next 3 decades, lol.

You should see the OUHCOM Campus (Theres 3 of them and theyre associated with Cleveland Clinic). Most beautiful school I've ever seen. It may not necessarily have to come from tax payer money. I think home-depot afforded 100 million dollars to NYU to support their endeavors. IDK, I'm just offering a plausible hypothetical answer to this hypothetical question.

1. Just based on numbers NYU has a class size of 132, OUHCOM has a class size of 253.
2 .NYU estimated 600 million dollars to pay for a class of 132 going forward. 132/600=~4.6 million per student
3.OUHCOM would need 1.150 billion dollars. Thus my original comment of needing a billion dollar endowment. What are the chances that OUHCOM will get its hands on a billion dollars?

Additional reasons why it wont happen.
Look at their annual report and look for how much income is derived from student tuition. It's close to 45 percent of total revenues. New Shiney toys don't mean much because those can be bought on bonds especially by a public institute.
OUHCOM being a public institution would have to justify why their medical school would be recieving free tuition consideirng the OU didnt break even last year and the shambles the ohio budget is in.
OUHCOM has very little endowment marked for itself and OU has almost 1/8 the endowment of NYU for long term non-tuition related expense.

I wholeheartedly agree with you regarding ouhcom. On the part of NYU doesn't 4.6 mil per student seem excessive? What in the heck could be pushing the cost so high?

When my school increased seats by 50 but still kept hiking up tuition I swore off ever giving them a dime

4.6 mill is to fund tuition into perpetuity. So they are basically living off the interest.
4.6 mill / 4x 5%= 57000.

Sigh... This makes me sad. Maybe one day things will change, but looks like debt city is where I am headed.

Seriously? Where did the money go? Did they at least invest in new “shiny things” on campus or at least hire a few more professors? Things like that make my blood boil. I understand if a school is going to rip me a new one, but you better make up for it on amenities (“Free” board material, laptop, etc).

ROFL. It's called profit. Or more money waste being funneled to some third party hacks in which some school faculty or admin people have a stake in.

Yeah no, we got nothing. Could argue it went to "new clinical site development" but new sites don't cost 2.5 million a year to run I would wager

Same at LMU DCOM. Our money goes toward redoing everything not related to the med school and building stuff for the vet school. Word in the streeet is the great benefactor of our school owns a construction company (or somebody in his family does) and they use them to build all the new projects. I would like to see how much these projects cost one could assume probably an outrageous amount vs true market value. And there is heavy nepotism at my school. Doubt this is rare amoungst do schools though. Many of the board members also seem to have “vested” interest in the community also. Aka busine$$$$$ the school kids would use a lot

It sure doesn’t go toward clinical education besides paying preceptors lol or quality clinical faculty

Of course this is word on the street so I’m not saying it’s fact. But ever since the med school increased its size all these new things exploded construction wise such as buildings sports fields etc.

I’d die at the stakes before I gave a dime to my school

Minus the intrigue surrounding who owns the construction, sounds a lot like our school.

Admin: "What do you students want?"
Students: "Stop hiking tuition to pay for renovations that don't --"
Admin: "The world may never know..."
Students: "But we just sa--"
Admin: "Such mysterious, beautiful creatures. Professionalism lectures for you all!"

Yeah pretty much. I mean it is understood they are businesses but they guide themselves as non profits thus not paying their fair share of tax burden a business would otherwise do. I remmeber there was a graph floating around that DCOM had the highest profit to expense ratio out of any do school. I think it was listed on the nbome or aoa website. So at least it is publicly obvious they do not put cash towards students

Wish I could find it now lol but I swear it’s out there. At least we aren’t omm heavy and they give more boards time than most schools but dang do schools are so shady sometimes

This is a good place to start. Zdogg talks a lot about how if you wanna assess the "non-profit" status of the healthcare world, look up their 990 form. My more "vocal" classmates look it up for our school all the time.

Sad but true comments across the board. Believe me, I feel your pain.

The money most likely goes back into the general pool for the university as a whole. If my school is a guide, you would be shocked at how many academic programs are money losers, and are kept afloat by the cash machines we call the med schools. In the same vein, in many hospitals , surgery dept's keep FM dept's afloat.

Why don't they just shut down those money losers????

Great question!

EDIT: also want to add that we faculty also are aggrieved at these financial shenanigans. It's not like we're jumping up and down for raises. I want to see that money invested into rotation sites and residency slots.

TCOM's Testing Services had extra budget this year so every student in my class got a hard copy of FA 2019, Savarese's OMT Review, and their choice of Sketchy Medical or Pathoma. : )

Dang I’m jealous ours buys us combank and finally this year bought us onlinemeded.

They would never spend money on us for boards they tell us to listen to our laughable clinical faculty half who SOAPed into fm. Who act like they are God’s gift to board prep and make sure to shove their unwanted advice on students

Thanks made sure to make this spread like wildfire. U da man

I don’t really think the salaries at my school are unfair but allocation of our tuition money is basically a felony

Insecurity doesn't stop at the attending level.

I know unfortunately. At least they are few and far between but it seems like many of them have conglomerated at my school.

Ptl we don’t rotate w our clinical faculty

Y'all--COMP is probably the worst of the bunch in this regard. Our school hikes tuition by whatever ridiculous percent every year, of course. But, the funding for the entire University is shuffled around between colleges (vet med, optometry, podiatry) and it ends up that the DO school pays for the existence of the other colleges that actually are in the negative every year (ie can't fund themselves with their own tuition). So, imagine not only paying for your own ****ty education and getting nothing for it, but watching the other colleges on your campus have nicer things and more study space and realizing you pay for that. 🙂 Its sure great to be a DO!

TCOM is probably better suited to do this than OUHCOM

That is a little misleading. Lerner college of medicine is associated with the Cleveland Clinic and rotates at the Cleveland Clinic.

Heritage college is associated with South pointe Hospital one of the small community hospitals the Cleveland Clinic bought in the area

Just got an email about a 3% tuition bump. Tears of laughter from the thread title turned to tears of sadness.
