Hi,
My friend invited me to his white coat ceremony and I was wondering what I should buy for him? Any suggestions or advice? Not sure what to do? thanks!

I received a few gifts, all school-oriented - like a very nice leather attache with my initials. But I got those at home where I invited everyone for coffee/dessert after the ceremony. Gifts are certainly not expected, but it's a nice gesture if that's what you want to do. I wouldn't carry a gift to the ceremony, however - it's going to be very crowded and loud and your friend won't have the time or the privacy to thank you properly.

No-doz so he can stay awake during clinical hours!

Are they a coffee drinker? If so a gift card to Starbucks if there is one in their area. Otherwise gift cards to various eating places are always nice to have when you are studying and need to eat and are running low on funds.

Unless they ask specifically for med school stuff, chances are they've got what they need...

I've already been given 2 stethoscopes, 2 reflex hammers and a couple of other doo dads that I don't know what to do with.

At this point, the coffee idea would sound pretty good. Or other free-food stuff. Maybe even something for his new place. Keep in mind your friend is going to have no money for a very long time.

Good God! You are one lucky medical student-- to the OP, you're not obligated to get your friend anything, it's just a white coat ceremony. If you're a particularly nice mood, a card with a gift certificate to Starbucks or Border's is always a nice gesture. But don't worry on it.
