Does every college preforms a white coat ceremony early in september ( i know NYCPM does) ? And wats the point of it done as a freshman?

Barry's is in the summer after 2nd year and basic sciences... before you enter the clinics. They give you a pretty nice fitted white coat and set up nice appetizers/lunch/refreshments for the faculty and students + family/friends.

I agree that the white coat ceremony right after freshman orientation is a bit of a head scratcher. Not too sure why they'd spend that money buying white coats, food, etc when a fair number of those incoming students may never make it to clinic? Some MD schools do the white coat ceremony early, but they are also selective and consistently have ~95% of their matriculants graduate. I don't think NYCPM (or any pod school) has attrition that low.

we had ours at DMU yesterday. nice ceremony, took about two hours, good reason for the folks to visit for the weekend

they got to meet the dean, ask questions, tour the campus, see the anatomy lab (cadavers covered), meet all my good friends here, drink brewskis, mom insisted on doing my laundry/cleaning my apartment, etc.

Sounds really nice ... they must have been proud!! i think its a good confidence booster and a chance for the parents to see thier kids in the white a lil early!!

At DMU, in the first year you have Physical Diagnosis where you need your white coat because you go in and practice and H and P on a mock pt. They take it very seriously. Just an example of why, at least at DMU, you would need your white coat as an incoming 1st year.

For me, I like the idea of working hard for my white coat. It is like a two-year goal to make it through the basic sciences and finally get my white coat. It's the half-way point to becoming a doctor. This is just how I feel.
