Who actually applied to UCLA-PRIME?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i think they are done giving out secondaries ... this is an email they sent to me after I sent them an update letter on Jan. 9th... I haven't gotten mine either... so hello rejection!

Hello,

Thank you for your email. The review for a secondary will be based on your primary application from AMCAS. Once students receive an invitation for a secondary, we will be happy to update your application with the information you provided below. All invitations will be sent out by this Friday.

Best wishes,

UCLA PRIME

Does the UCLA prime program have an emphasis of some sort like the other UCPrime programs? I couldn't find much information on it off of their website other than the basic degree/program outline. Also, are there any specific difference between the three sites (advantages/disadvantages)?

does this mean that they only send out one batch of invites for interviews? ooohh, i'm worried.. good luck everyone!

Their web site is kinda vague, but from what i gathered their emphasis is only on the underserved. Does not distinguish urban/rural/latino etc. So, it sounds like its pretty open to whatever you are interested in.

The only differences I can think of would be that with the UCLA Drew/PRIME you would do clinical with Drew students, with Haider/PRIME you start med school at UCR and with Geffen/PRIME you would be a Geffen student and do your 1st 2 years and clinical with Geffen. So, it really depends on where you want to be and where you want to take your classes.
Hope that helps! good luck!:luck:

Does that mean they haven't actually started interviewing? Where did you get this info? I called to check on my app and they told me that they were backed up in opening the mail that 's why my file wasn't complete. Good thing you walked it in! 🙂

I heard this from someone who personally knows the PRIME people at UCLA, so I hope this information is correct!! That being said, I dont think they have started interviewing or even handing out interviews yet! There is still plenty of time for this!!

But, i do have a question:

IF UCLA PRIME interviews us, and accepts us, does Geffen have to actually accept us also, or do they have the 'power' to let us in?

hrmm this may not actually be an answer to your question ladydoc...but i know that with ucla/drew the drew committee selects its applicants..and then it goes to ucla (david geffen im assuming) for approval---but i think most times they approve what drew says...

i dont know if thats the same case as prime..its possible that prime is completely autonomous and has 12 slots that it is in charge of deciding upon...(my impression that this is how it is down at uc davis (prime) though i am not positive) and then maybe the three ucr, ucladgsom and ucla/drew then figure out how the prime students are distributed based on preferences...

just

Me too! I thought it was a rejection email because they started with the "Thank you for applying..." As I read it I kept waiting for the "Unfortunately..." part. Haha. Did you get this email too?

Thanks for the :luck: and good luck to you too!

yea, i got it this morning-- they should know better! we're pre-meds and freak out about anything and everything...

be sure to post if you get an interview!

UCLA PRIME deemed me unworthy of a secondary. I'm glad I was encouraged to apply and spend more money. oh well....

Me too. More and more, med school is beginning to look like a joke for me.

does anyone knows how many applicants are they gonna interview, considering they only have 18 spots?

Did anyone hear from them today, since today i believe is the first day they are sending out interview invites.

the FAQ said they were gonna start inviting applicants today... however, the update they emailed on Feb 6th... said: "We hope to begin providing interview invitations the week of Feb. 18th."

i am thinking that is to account for the invitation to arrive by snail mail.

I was wrong.... according to the same feb 6th email: "invitations for an interview will be sent to applicants via email"

so, i wonder if they just haven't send out any invitations yet.... or they just invited non-SDNers

I called yesterday and they had not sent out invites. He said by the end of the week. Also, they will be interviewing 78 people.

78! thats a 23% chance of getting in (all things been equal) if you get an invitation.... and considering they are only gonna have 3 interviews dates, that means out of 26 interviewees only 6 will get accepted during each interview. 😱

That makes me a little sad. I really like the UCLA-PRIME program-- I wonder how many people applied......

I wonder that too...
I'm just guessing that if they settle for 78 interviews they must have at least 2x that many secondaries... maybe 3X?

They had a total of 215 secondaries.

No problem. We're all in the same boat.

I spoke to someone on the phone less than an hour ago. He said they would be sending out the first batch of interviews today. Lets hope that actually happens.

lol

here we go again... watching my gmail refresh! how fun! :hardy:

They said that they were interviewing around 70-80 students i believe this year, for 15 spots. ack! And its going to be a large panel "speed date" type interview with about 13 panel members.

I'm crossing my fingers!

Also, apparently they are both calling AND emailing invites. how odd. =P

Man...... those are tough statistics..... it's like the same as applying to Geffen regular except all the numbers are smaller but still same proportion

5:00PM-- i guess it is safe to assume i wont be getting an invitation today...

did anyone else have better luck?

Anyone get a phone call from Emma Ledesma today. They are scheduling interviews over the phone, and will send a followup email. I just booked mine. Good luck.

Congratulations! When is your interview? Did you get any info from her about how the interviews will go? And uhm.. what time did she call? 😛

so i've switched from obsessing about email to obsessing over phone calls--
good luck everyone!:luck:
be sure to post when you get interviews and when they called!

I received a called around 11:30 I believe. Im not exactly sure since my phone was dead and they left a voicemail. I scheduled my interview though a little after one. My interview is on March 16th , apparently they had two sessions for that day 8 and 915. When they called me they had two days available for me, the 16th and the 29th.

Im not exactly sure of the format they told me they were gonna send out a detailed email with an article that will provide information about the interview. Thats about as much as I know, I neglected to ask about how many students will interview and stuff of that nature.

Good luck everyone.
