Who did you rank LAST?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is a interesting/cool thread:

10) CPMC
11) UC Davis
12) Mt. Sinai

Hope this thread doesn't bring anyone down on Match Day.

But I will reveal my last pick: UT- Galveston!

*By the way idoc, you must have had some good interviews. I thought Mizzou has a pretty impressive program as far as surgical experience, and the residents are extremely friendly!

11. Florida
12. Ohio State
13. Case Western

I really like OSU, but I've been in Ohio for 26 years and I'd like to go somewhere else for at least a few years. If I have to go down this far, I guess I'll be deleting this post very early friday morning!😀

11) MEEI

If you interviewed with some of the retina staff there you would understand....

Why do I suddenly think that I just cursed myself to spending the next 4 years in Boston?

Tulane, baby! Won my pick for dead last.

LIJ, st vincents, northshore

9. UC Davis
10. MCW
11. Wisconsin

It seems that several people have ranked UC Davis towards the end. I was actually pretty impressed with the program- excellent academics, good research, great environment, etc. Is it the q3 call during the 1st year?

There are several reasons (in no particular order) as to why I didn't rank the program highly (actually, I was almost about to not rank it):

1) The residents did not seem all that happy/enthusiastic to me.

2) One of the VA's is a 1.5hr drive away (provided there is no traffic); about 80 miles or something.

3) The residents are quite spread out, meaning interaction between residents is limited, decreasing the level of comraderie.

4) The call schedule is q3, but not only that, the call resident is covering three hospitals.

5) I just didn't get a very good vibe from the place.

6) Location isn't the greatest.

Given the above, I decided it wasn't really the best place for me...

Arizona
UMKC
Northwestern

I noticed a few of you ranked Memphis low. I thought they had a pretty strong program and growing fairly rapidly. Why rank so low?

I interviewed at Memphis and ended up not ranking them for several reasons.

1. Who knows when the new eye center will be functional for clinic use.

2. Currently, the attendings are no where near the residents during the day. (sporadic at best)

3. High crime area

4. Some of the attendings seemed fairly disinterested during the whole process

However,

I do feel that the program will move up the ranks once the eye center is complete. This will not only bring everyone together, but will also facilitate better everyday teaching.

Overall, it wasn't by any means a bad program--I just wanted to know a little more about the environment in which I would spend 3 years.

I got the same impression. Give it a few years. It was the only program I interviewed with that the residents were openly critical of.

here's my bottom three:

8) UT-Chatanooga
9) Cleveland Clinic (location, location, location)
10) UT-Galveston

This is an interesting thread....

I know this sounds dumb, but I ranked MCW low only because I liked the other programs more. It's a fine program in a fine city and the surgical volume is adequate. I just got more excited about other programs.

I'm glad so many people ranked Memphis low. I know some of the hang-ups, but some of those residents that were critical seem to be pretty critical of everything. Plus, I think I want to do plastics and you really can't go many places better (at least not any I went to). They supposedly have placed plastics fellows every year they've tried. We'll see in a few days though when all this talk is meaningless. By the way my low goes to Tulane, with LSU unranked. Could go unmatched and match next year and be done at the same time as LSU's 4 year program, and with equally good numbers and a liver that hasn't been destroyed by New Orleans.

I'll agree with you there. Loads of plastics cases there--interesting ones too, given the onc/plastics chairman. I, on the other hand, definitely do not want to do plastics. Hope you get your wish. 😉

what didn't you like about wake?

There actually wasn't anything that I didn't like about Wake Forest. I would be happy to match there. I don't know about the rest of you, but once I ranked my top three I had a hard time ranking the rest. I changed my list several times before I finally sent it in. My wife had a lot of say in the final decisions. We are not from the south so I think it had a lot to do with location. Same thing with NYU. We have been in NYC for the past four years and we are just ready for a change.

My least favorite program was Pittsburgh.

There was something weird about the program. Maybe it was the fried, greasy hamburgers they served for lunch that turned me off. The program seemed like it would provide good training, but they cover so many hospitals and the residents looked pretty worked over

6. Albert Einstein
7. NYU
8. Cook County

Hope I ranked enough places...Good luck to all tomorrow!

I was thinking of applying to MEEI for a retina fellowship for 2005. Is there something I should know about the retina staff??? 😕
I'd rather find out the painful truth in advance

(Send me a private message & I'll keep it confidential if you prefer 🙂 )

this was a while ago -

MCG
cleveland clinic
MEEI

Shredhog, mind if I ask why you ranked MEEI last. I'm thinking of applying there for a fellowship next year.

Andrew, I am definitely thinking of Iowa too - I worked with a guy who did a strabismus fellowship in Iowa many years ago & he loved it. I'm waiting to get my password from the SF Match so I can start finding out the details of the different programs. Do you know how much operating the retinal fellows get in Iowa?

Thanks guys

Shredhog,

I am also curious why you ranked MCG towards the end. I am currently a student there, and will most likely rank them high (maybe #1), b/c my fiance wants to stay in that area.

first, that was 2 matches ago.

i ranked them last because i just didn't get a good feel for the program. also, i couldn't see myself living in augusta. i thought MCG was good, but not at the level of the other programs i interviewed at.

retinamark,

i didn't think MEEI residents got enough hands on experience with anything (to put it bluntly). i got the impression that residents spent alot of time watching their attending examine patients. also, the surgical numbers were very low. that said, it is MEEI and the pathology seen there is amazing. also, i have no idea what a retina fellowship would be like there.
