when a resident is nice to me that means they are a cool person but not necessarily interested in teaching me and furthering my education, with these sort i get along great b'c im just chit-chatting away and probably not reading/studying as much as i could , residents that fell in this category would be from IM, psych, OBgyn
when a resident is demanding that means that they will "pimp" me by asking me lots of questions about material that is actually relevant to a 3rd/4th medstudent, they will ask me to read about things a day ahead and then make sure that they go over these topics thoroughly, if i get something wrong, their "demand" will force to me to avoid mistakes by studying/working harder, if i get some pimp question wrong, i tend to remember it MORE than the ones i get right. residents that fell into this category would be mine from surgery, some from IM, some from neuro, some from OB
when a resident is an a$$hole/beotch, they belittle me, keep me in the hospital for hours when there is no learning for the me as a student while they dictate/call up consults/whatever they get paid to do ,,,when they could have sent me home so i could read/study. these residents (from my experience) seem to be awful at teaching and have no regard for medical students except to make their lives miserable.. residents that fell into this category mostly were from Peds, FM, some from IM
you can see that different residents from different specialties will fall into different categories, stereotyping will always be a foolhardy approach in medicine but unfortunately we do it all the time
