Ahh, acronyms...I love how I saw CBT and thought something very different than computer based testing. I was wondering how cognitive behavioral therapy would come into play on the general GRE 🙂. Anyway, I obviously won't be taking it as I am a first year, but I nonetheless wish you the very best of luck!

I still get flashbacks of this one problem. It was a spacial problem...I had it on TWO of my practice tests and then the EXACT freaking question on the exam....and I couldn't remember if the answer I selected was the wrong one from the exam, or the answer they gave me. 🙁

I still have nightmares about this one word, "diluvial". I'd seen it in my wordsmart book, didn't know what it meant. The day before I took the GRE I was at my dad's clinic studying and I asked him what it meant 'cause I couldn't find a dictionary and the internet was down. He shooed me away and said he was busy. Next day I go, sit down, the test's going really well, then my VERY LAST WORD was diluvial.

Anyway, you don't get your writing score right away, just the math and verbal.

Yeah, I hope I don't have to retake the GRE next year when I re-apply for Fall '09. The verbal was a pain for me and I would rather not deal with that stress again. I have a decent score (1310, 770Q, 540V) but it could be improved. Ah well, I'll ask my advisor and deal with it next year. I still have moving stress to deal with. 😀

Anyways, good luck Squarepants! I retook the GRE in the fall and things were fine with the scoring part. I agree--I like the fact you know how you did (at least on the verbal and quant.) so you can adapt appropriately.

Just get in, and after you do some IQ assessments (administer) you will feel REALLY smart because you can ace all of the questions!! 😀

Yeah, I know huh? I took it to mean that I was doing well since it's such an obscure word. That's the beauty of those computer adaptive tests, you always have a general idea of how you're doing.

But to this day I can't remember what diluvial means. Now I have a mental block.

Words are awesome. Anyway, I have taken the GRE, but am potentially re-taking it in late September to bring up a miserable Analytic Writing score. We'll see. I took it in early September last year, though, and had no problems-- Just make sure to take it before your coursework piles up, if you're in school at the moment. 🙂

I'm already depressed. I've been studying my word smart book and my cracking the GRE book every single day. 20 new words a day, flash card form, review every day.

Here's a great resource for GRE vocab. It must be the most extensive GRE word list out there. Check it out. I forced myself to memorize every single word on the list and scored a 790 on the Verbal. (The quantitative part is a different story 🙁)

Hi all! Taking the GRE this Saturday - been studying vocab since mid-May, started reviewing math in June - I am so ready to make this test go away! Hopefully, we won't need a retake.....

PULCHRITUDE. That was my favorite word - what a weird sounding word for "physical beauty", it sounds like it would mean just the opposite.

I wish those of you taking the GRE over the next couple of months much luck. With all of my anxiety about starting grad school and the blues I get being on an unfamiliar campus 🙁, getting lost and yelled at by campus police (for driving through a lot where I was not allowed to park, how DARE I??), it helps to know that at least I don't have to take the GRE again.

i'm taking it in october. i'm trying to study as much as i can, but with a full time RA job and also waiting tables/bartending, it's such a challenge.

i'm an adult, been out in the work force for nearly 10 years, and it is so hard to reconcile the importance of this test with the meaninglessness, in practical terms, of so many of the questions. while i happen to have a great vocab, it is so discouraging to use it in good writing, since quality writing, and especially academic writing, should be accessable. much of our work is also on subjects who don't speak english as a first language, and that makes me sensitive to the plight of my non-english speaking colleagues, who may enjoy learning what pulchritude means over a glass of wine after work, but would not welcome coming across it in a paper or lecture.

my math background is weak, but it's not like my Prof. could do our stats by hand either. without spss most of my department, save the actual stats profs., would be up a river paddle free. and knowing the sa of a cube, well, it is helpful in figuring out how much paint to buy if you want to redo your room, but psych-wise...

thanks for letting me vent! my apps are going in the fall/winter for fall 2008, phd clinical, with a smattering of general/experimental MA's and psyd. nervous!

Whenever you want, really. You can take the general almost anytime and the subject three times a year (April, Oct., and Dec., from my recollection). Different people have different opinions on when the "best" time to take it is--some say right after intro, some say wait until your last year. Keep in mind that psych GRE scores take about two months to get, so taking the tests later in the year is cutting things short if you intend on applying that winter.

Edit: oh, and check to see if you even need to write the psych GRE. If you test closer to when you apply, you'll have a clear idea of whether any universities you want to apply to even take psych GRE scores. Many (and the number seems to be increasing) don't. It'll be listed on application requirements on the department website.

I just want to add one thing to JockNerd's reply: GRE scores are only good for 5 years, so you should do it relatively close to when you apply. If you want to get your masters first, factor that into your timetable to make sure those 5 years dont' expire your score.
