Am I the only one who loathes the act of studying? Many people in my class seem to appreciate, or at least give in to, the reality of studying each day. There are people who even read ahead, and use outside books to supplement their knowledge. They all seem relatively happy after the library, perhaps because they feel so accomplished?

Personally, I admire learning, just not for hours on end each day and in such a strict and regimented manner. I find the material we're learning now pretty fascinating, and still can't get myself to study regularly. I get on track for 2-3 days, staying after school to review notes etc. And the next day I decide to give myself a break after having worked so hard. That's when my motivation falls apart, when I remember how nice it is not to be burdened with books trapped in a library somewhere. How can I overcome this? I keep telling myself to sit down and just do it. That only works for so long before my diligent student enthusiasm wears off.

I too feel the same way. I am a learn-by-doing type of person so this sit-n-learn method is dreadful and I try to avoid it as much as possible. I know the clinical years are in some way more work, but I think I will learn much more than I am now. So far none of this stuff "means" anything to me without any real applications. I too hate sitting in my chair to study. I would rather watch paint dry.

It definitely sucks. Maybe you could get a group of like-minded individuals together and study?

The real question is: Who DOESN'T hate studying?

Hang in there, this will be over before we know it.

I dont necessarily hate studying, because it leads to me being able to do exceptionally well on tests and be better than everyone else!! Unfortunately to be the best i end up doing school stuff literally all day which sucks.

IE.

8am-5pm ......class........or (8am-3pm class 3pm-5pm gym)
5pm-10pm .....study that day's class notes
10pm-12am... pre-read the next day's lecture
12am-6am .....sleep

and REPEAT!!

I know that lots of my classmates do the same. How people do this without going insane, I do not know. On a recent productive day, I spent a whole 4 hours studying and thought that was a big accomplishment. The only time I can devote the majority of my day to studying is right before exams.

Do you study on weekends too? When do you give yourself a break?

I'm a very visual learner, which means lots of reading on my own. Group study would be ineffective for my learning style, and I'd likely get distracted.

What worked for me was a change of scene.. ie a study place outside of school and my apartment, both places where I get off track. Once I'm at my sweet spot, I study. The problem is I tell myself, "I'll go in an hour" etc. I simply dread the notion of having to study consistently. And I know I will have to, especially since everyone tells us how second year makes first year look like a cakewalk.

Amen. I have nothing against hard work. I know that the clinical years will take up more time and be challenging in a different way, but at least we'll get that instant gratification of reading about OUR patients, making what we learn directly relevant to what we're trying to accomplish. I can't wait.

on weekends I take it a little easier since thereis no new material that day.

sat 6:30 wake up
7:00 Gym
10am-8pm study that weeks notes
8pm-12/1 am --go out and let loose

Sun 7:30
9am-12am basketball with guys
12-5 restudy that weeks Labs
5-8 study the next weeks notes
8-12 watch tv and relax

Yeah my roomates tell me that if they did that then they would literally go insane. I however, almost need to live on a schedule and stay productive otherwise I would go insane! (maybe I have ocd..)
