I want to know more about your experience. I already read up on the requirements like living in the state for 12 months, etc. But I want to know more about the process. Did you apply through the school or somewhere else? Do they really pick apart your residency form or was it a relatively smooth process?

Texas is VERY picky about residency. You cannot just live in the state for 12 months. You must either work for 12 months or have owned property for 12 months. Living in Texas does not give you residency.

I've read all the rules and here's my situation: will have lived here 12 months by the time I apply, haven't been able to find a job yet, my husband lives and works here, no owned property. I read somewhere that being married to a resident qualifies. So do I qualify or am I screwed?

ETA: This is the part that confuses me:
A domicile in Texas is presumed if, at least 12 months prior to the census date of the semester in which he or she is to enroll, the person owns real property in Texas, owns a business in Texas, or is married to a person who has established a domicile in Texas. Gainful employment other than work-study and other such student employment can also be a basis for establishing a domicile

I am not positive on the rules for marriage but I lived in Texas for 12 months with my fiance who owns property for 12 months. I applied through TMDSAS as a resident of the state and was placed into non-resident status. They said that I needed to work in the state for a period of 12 months or own property myself. I think that if you are married to someone who is a resident here you might be considered a resident. You can call TMDSAS and they will tell your residency.

I'll do that. Are TMDSAS the ones who decide residency? I am applying to grad schools and thought it was the school's decision.
