I never turned in any of my MD secondaries. Not only would I like to learn OMM, but I feel like as a 27 year-old with a family I fit in better at the particular DO schools that I am looking at.

All DO for me.....

My husband and I didn't apply to any MD schools. He attended one before and just felt that the DO students were less competitive with each other, more helpful and had more fun. I feel the same way as slim too. I really want to learn OMM and feel that DO schools are a better fit for me as a nontraditional student and mother of two.

Why does the second option say yes, it's my back up, but I'm not sure where I'd go? If you're not sure, it's not a backup, it's just another option.

Mods, please watch to make sure this thread doesn't deteriorate into a flame war.

So, DObound. What are your thoughts on the subject? You applied MD and DO, so are you using DO as a backup? Also, what are you hoping to get out of starting this thread? Just curious . . .

I applied to both MD and DO schools, however I don't consider DO to be a backup per se. Rather, I applied to my in-state DO school as another option to consider, in addition to the MD schools I applied to.

I applied to both (MD instate, DO both in and out) to maximize my chances of staying near home....

Now, I can't imagine being anything BUT a DO. I wouldn't take an acceptance from one of the MD schools I applied to if the offered it to me. Not because I think there's anythign wrong with being an MD (duh) or anythign like that. But just because I want to be the most complete physician I can, and in my mind that means exploring every avenue possible to help those I'm going to be serving.

harvard is my safety.

only applied to DO, I'm too good-looking to be a M.D

What an incredibly original thread

I would hate to be painted in that light, but since I applied late, it does seem like I am treating DO as a back-up, but I'm not. Yes I was not very successful with my allo apps, however, I was just uneducated about Osteopathic schools. After I met a student from NYCOM and have been working with a DO, I did some research with the intentions of applying next year. When I saw that I could still apply, I put my feelers out there. What do I have to lose? If it doesn't work out, I know much more about Osteopathy and I will certainly apply DO again next year and broaden my horizons. To me, DO is a means to an end, just like MD, but with the benefits of some interesting additional training. In the end, my goal is to be a physician regardless of the route I take.

very well stated.

The first time I applied, I didn't know much about DO schools either. I took some time to educate myself about it, and I've been doing OMM on myself since I was about 12, so I decided to apply to a bunch this time around. I was accepted to one I like, and I am happy to say that I will be attending.

can't vote because my option was not listed. I really preferred DO but applied to local MD schools to make the wife happy and especially because the local state school costs 1/3 as much as the outta state DO schools and we wouldn't have to move. As it turns out, I only got into DO schools and am very, very happy to learn OMM and the "osteopathic way".

I originally applied to both, but once I learned of the wholesome goodness associated with the DO way, and I saw the light, it was clear. I got into the DO school I wanted to get into, and withdrew from all of the other MD and DO schools that I was applying to.

I applied to both, and will truly just pick the school that I feel is the best fit for what I hope to accomplish in my career as a physician. I don't care what the letters behind my name are, as long as I can be a doctor. I feel that I can get a great education at any of the schools I applied to...that's why I was pretty selective over where I applied- I actually CHOSE the schools pretty specifically rather than just applying everywhere and keeping my fingers crossed.

I applied to about 17 allopathic and 5 DO schools. I got into all the DO schools, and as of now, I will be going to OUCOM. However, I interviewed at 3MD schools, all of which I was much more impressed with than the DO schools I interviewed at. I really don't care about the initials next to my name, but I will choose any of the three MD schools I'm waiting on over OUCOM.

What's the difference between MD and DO?

Applied to both. I'm more interested in the school being a good fit for my family and me, than the degree. From the five that have interviewed me, the DO school is in the middle of the pack, all things being equal. Will have to see who (if any!) accept me and what the financial implications would be.

i got interviews from 4 d.o. schools (midwestern, kcom, kcumb, and desmoines) and 2 MD schools (Mizzou and St. louis). I never knew much about D.O. schools until my MD dad made me start filling out the secondaries and telling me how if i didn't get into med school before i graduate my *** is toast lol. He went to the caribbean so getting making sure his son went to a US med school was a big deal.

I instantly didnt get a good vibe because i found out 3 of my cousins were attending d.o. schools mainly because the MD programs rejected them, and they are all very bright, although the mcat didnt show it. Hell, I didnt know what OTM or whatever was until i saw it demonstrated at the kcom interview.

i just kinda bs'ed the interview at kcom and kcumb and got acceptance. but then when slu accepted me i declined those and cancelled my interviews at the others. I have to say though, the D.O. interviewers were WAYYYY better than the MD ones.
