This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There is a 95% chance Im going to Temple...

Im looking to buy a place in either the Roxborough or East Falls area...I gotta go down to Philly for a week to check out the scene...

are you gonna buy property or rent osushi gurl?

Anyone else joining the TEmple family next year???

How long after the interview did you guys know you're accepted?

Ditto from me...how long after your interview until you knew that you were accepted? Also, did you receive a letter (certified/regular mail), email, or telephone call? Sorry about all of the specific questions but my mailman has been 'erratic' in his delivery habits! 🙁 -FS

Maybe, my case will not be the best situation to compare with, because it was during the holidays....I interviewed on Dec. 18 and my letter was dated Jan. 7.........but remember, there were the holidays in between......

Hey future classmates,
I'll be starting at Temple in August and will be looking for housing this summer.
i interviewed in early Dec. and got accepted about 3 weeks later. they let you know thru regular mail. you can always call and check your status.

I interviewed early November, and I got the acceptance by regular mail on Dec. 1st.

I will most likely rent a place. Hey Avingupta, how much is property over there?

I am thinking more and more about Temple as the place I want to go. I still haven't gotten word from them post interview though.

Well, it all depends on the area....you can spend 50000 or you can spend 150000

Im looking to buy a really nice place, and for a really nice place, its damn cheap, thats for sure!

If you're going to buy a place to gain residency, which they will grant you when you BUY property, I would make sure that your Canadian citizenship will not interfere with the process. I don't know the process when it comes to non-US residents but I don't see any Canadian's in my class taking this step so I would definitely call up the school and ask. Just my two cents. Also isn't 150,000 American dollars like 150,000,000 Canadian dollars(sorry, I couldn't resist😀 ). Anyways, good luck.

avingupta has dual citizenship.
He is a GOLDEN BOY!!!

no no no...I dont have dual...i have a greencard, so I can get instate residency...thats the first question Pat asked me when I inquired about getting cheaper tuition.....I currently have residency in Massachussetts, but Mass sucks, because they dont have state schools!!

and damn you for that exchange rate comment!! But i cant rant on ya, cause come the winter, Ill be begging you for past exams/advice! Must hold back....must hold back....

I was also wondering when those of you who were accepted to Temple found out. I interviewed in mid-december and still have not heard..getting frustrated! Has anyone else been waiting this long also?

The US dollar is so weak right now that it makes travelling abroad to anywhere but Japan a really sad proposition. It's more likely that we'll get ripped off going to Canada these days.

Oh yah....you've read my mind!! Hows it lookin?

And Im sure classcest is not the biggest thing, so do you get to hang out with other health professional students a lot, since Temple's dental building is isolated from the main campus?

add me to the list..... also a californian

Looks like the Temple gang looks cool....I gotta find out more about Columbia's MPH program before I can tell you for certain if I can join the gang!

i dunno about classcest b/c you'll have the next 4 years to see that same person...but if all the girls are of osushi gurl's calibur, then there's gonna be a lota broken hearts in the city of brotherly love...😀

Look at that!! A 2nd year already hitting on the incoming frosh!! Dont worry osushi girl...the guys in your class are gonna protect ya from horny upperyear classmen like cusp! 😛

But osushi girl can feel free to bring any friends she meets in other schools to our dental bashes...gotta help your new dental brothers out!! 😎

hahhaha..i was gonna give you my last 2 years of back exams but now that you think i'm a horny upperclassman, i'll have to think about that...😎 ...
neways..after reading all those application essays, i know too much about too many of ya...hahaha..^_^ and
i don't believe in the classcest thing....especially since you will have to see that person for the next 4 years....or 2 years in my case next year...hmmm....maybe i'll have to rethink this... 😍

just sent in my second deposit. see you guys in a few months!

I will probably see you guys there too! Good luck house hunting.🙂

hurting because of the lack of Californians or hurting in the sense of socially inept people?

my essay was cheesy. =X

Hey Cusp,

Do you know Al ? He ended up being my interviewer. Nice guy.

If you happen to bump into Amish, say HI for me! He graduated from my school!

does he have a goatee and glasses?...if so yeah...he's my classmate...=oP I don't know amish though. This other girl in my class went to UOP...she sits a couple seats down from me in lab. =oP...hehehe...don't worry about your essay being cheesy...it got you in didn't it? ^_^

I'm waiting to hear from MI, but I'm gonna send in my $750 tomorrow...it's a great school w/an awesome clinical experience. I'll probably do the DMD-MBA thing as well.

-AKAawesome

I'm glad you chose Temple (at least for now). I'm also very interested in the joint DMD/MBA program. The MBA is totally free of cost...can't get that anywhere else. I'm not sure if we have to take the GMAT...i'm just too tired to go thru standardized tests again.

could anyone here give us some suggestions on housing? thanks.

for the first semester, i'll most likely rent a place. you seem to know the area well, do u know where most dental students live?

Guys..I was in Philly over the weekend...LIVE IN ROXBOROUGH!!! 😱

ITS SOOOO NICE! Complete 180 degrees change from the Temple campus...you couldnt even believe 10 mins away from campus is like a forest paradise! Huge forests, streams, bike paths....all you need is a fuking elf, Robin Hood and a pied piper and you'd be in some fantasy book! Nice analogy eh 😉

hey avin,

were you able to look for homes in roxborough? and if so, can you share what you found?

Hey guys...if anyone is interested in buying a place, i have the perfect place for you. Please message me......its VERY VERY cheap and very close to the school and I saw it last weekend....its a gem for sure!

I heard that the didactic courses are taught by the school of medicine. Do we have to take them with med students?

Hey guys......Im sure all of you have gotten the housing information in the mail by now. It really seems like Temple is jocking Summit Park big time, eh? I wonder if they get a cut? 🙄

Anyways.......Summit Park seems really cool, eh? Wrong! I thought the same thing.....with the rent being very reasonable and all those social events......how could you go wrong? But when I checked out reviews of this place, it doesnt look good. Goto this website and read the reviews:

http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate?a=v&complex_id=215482078819128&showall=true

It seems like from these reviews that Summit is like a huge fraternity and a big party house. Im sure thats all cool for a couple of months, but then afterwards Im sure it gets annoying. I just hope that at least a few of our classmates live in Summit, because those parties really sound crazy! Also, it seems like the free internet is crappy and that if you have car, forget about it, cause parking is impossible. I just wanted to give you guys the heads up about this place before you sign the lease! 😀

Hey guys........Just talked to some family friends who live in Pennsylvania and they gave me a little tip.....when u move down there and are buying stuff for the house.....expensive stuff like a tv and such....drive down to Delaware....its only 45 mins away from temple and it has NO TAX! Save some good cash if you were buying alot of stuff. 😀

That is true. Big ticket items warrant a trip down to Delaware. But also consider how you'd transport big items like couches etc... could rent a pickup for a day? Also i think the best way to get the price you want is to shop around and keep an eye out for good deals. I came here with one small suitcase, and a car shipped to me with a few items in the trunk. I spent about 2 months slowly acquiring the things i needed to make my home complete. IKea is 10mins away (from summit gardens where i live, next door to summit park)... a students dream come true!! I picked up an awesome flatscreen from best buy, it was open box and i bargained the price down even further. I definitely wouldnt have gotten my price if i drove to DE, even if i did save on tax. Tax is 6%, its not too bad... 14.5% back home in Vancity! Why rush into spending thousands in a week... just get the essentials! You have 4 years down here, no need to rush.

And to answer your question about summit park... it is a nice place. A lot of students live there, esp from Temple. BUT i find it too 'dorm' style, and way too crowded. They include all utilites which saves the hassle, but you get a smaller apartment for the same price you could pay elsewhere.

Consider Summit Gardens, Valley High, Woodmere, Henry On the Park. They are all equally popular, they are ALL right next door to each other pretty much, and 80% of temple med/dent students live there.

Summit Gardens is much smaller than SP, bigger apartments, quieter area... there are a lot of student families, single students and many retiree's here. All utilities except elec, which runs me about $20 a month. This place is quiet and peaceful and its got off street parking.

Henry is a huge 8 building complex, very spacious apartments, gated entry etc.. most of my classmates live there. You'll pay a little more, and utilties included can vary, but i definitely recommend u check it out.

Also, stick to Roxborough for your first year. Most of your classmates will be living in this area, and it would be easier for you to find a carpool. Once settled here, you can venture out into other neighbourhoods... which is the point where im at now!

If any of you guys need any help or have any Q's about moving to phila, give me a shout at [email protected]. I know how hard it was moving here alone and starting school! 🙂 👍

P.s. all these apartments include swimming pools, gyms etc. Summit communities (Park, Gardens, Valley and Woodmere) all share the same facilities. Henry has their own.

I live in Summit Park and would not believe all the bad things you hear about it. If you live in the back it is sometimes hard to find a parking space. I live in the front and there are always TONS. It is a great place to meet people when you are new to the area. I have a lot of friends that I have made around the complex that aren't in dental school and that is really nice because although I love my class you need a break from those people. Sometimes the people that live in here do remind me of college freshmen, but I don't think that is always a bad thing. The internet is horrible - in some of the buildings. Mine is terrible but some of my friends have never had a problem. The best thing about living in Summit Park your first year is that a lot of other people in your class will be here so if your car pool wants to stay late or leave early and you don't you can ALWAYS find a ride home. I don't know how many times I have had to do that. By no means is Summit where I want to spend all four years of dental school but I am glad that I was here for my first.

Hey...although I already bought my condo, realtors are still sending me available places in Philly.......although most of them are either garbage or too expensive, i was sent one today, that seemed really nice so I wanted to send it out to you guys. 2 bedroom condo in Roxbourough for $88,900 with low condo fee.

Do a search on it on a real estate site....its MLS #4353431

Wow, it's nice to see more Californians for the incoming class. I think our class literally had like only 5 from California, where as the other classes have like 20 or more or so.

And about where to live.....Roxborough is a nice area, and there's lots to do around there, but the problem is though, it's actually a bit farther than you might think. (Sorry I didn't tell you about this before avingupta). Once school starts, there's gonna be traffic, and it's probably gonna take a while longer to get to school. Also, when the snow comes, I've heard that you should prepare to leave like 45 minutes before you want to get to school.

I live in East falls, and it's a whole lot closer. Housing I think is less expensive here also. Takes about 10 minutes to get to school, and maybe just 10 extra with the snow. Thing is though, there isn't a whole lot to do around here, unlike Roxborough. both places have their pros and cons. Hope this helps for the upcoming 1st years 🙂

but from my place in Roxbourough I timed it exactly and it took me just over 9 mins to drive to teh dental school....the guy I bought my place from said even in the worst traffic, it should take me no more than 15 mins to drive there.....just down Henry, left on Alleghany, and boom, there.
