Please elaborate on how you don't expect to be paid for your time.

Do you go to one of those free schools and live in one of those free houses? Both of those things cost me money...and all that "free" health care means I'll have to earn $1.50 for every dollar I spend feeding my family

hello, 30%+ tax bracket. i work six days a week, and take home around 3.75 or so days worth of salary for it.

If you want to be paid nothing, that's fine. Your hospital that you're an employee at feels differently.

You'll get more money from the govt. for having them actually.

No, they'd be perfectly happy paying their docs nothing ; )
I meant the hospital would feel differently about it getting paid. I realize they couldn't give a **** less about whether the doctor wishes to forgo his salary.

the face my avatar is making is my default face at people. one brow raised, like "uh, really?" hehehehe
When they bring the wrong coffee or when they're in your parking spot? lol.

Dermie. Both!

Or when Kaus says something silly.

Or when my dad makes me stay late at work

etc etc etc
It's the "Do you know who I am?" or "You've got to be kidding me" or "Do a better job to amuse/entertain me" face.

Just curious what people's thoughts are on the 14 yo who is still on a ventilator a year later? That has to cost an insane amount of $$$
This is such a tragic case, and who wouldn't feel for the family, but they have got to let her go now. I've seen the videos of her supposed "responses" to things her mother says and does, and they look very much to me like random muscle spasms (and spinal reflexes in one case, but hey, I'm not a doctor yet, so what do I know). If you command her to do something over and over during a period when she has random muscle spasms, those two things are eventually going to line up and make it look vaguely like she's responsive, if you edit the clip down enough.

Also, and maybe this is no longer true, but I thought I read somewhere that her care was being paid for by some private Catholic organization or something.

If she's on Medicaid/MediCal, taxpayers are paying for it, so why would they stop?

The family needs to let her go. There is zero chance she will ever make a meaningful recovery. Little bits of firing here and there in her brain have been recorded, as has cerebral blood flow, but even with those things, her best case scenario is being a vegetable that occasionally blinks at you. If the family or some private charity is paying for things, they can keep her alive indefinitely, idgaf. But if it's the taxpayers, sorry family, we don't pay to ventilate and circulate blood through dead people.

If the government pays for it, who cares? The government pays for plenty of *****ic useless crap, keeping some poor kid alive and helping a grieving family is literally like the least terrible expenditure they could have.

the government doesn't pay for %^&*......the government makes those of us that earn the most money pay for it
Okay, the point still stands. Your money is going toward unfounded wars that have killed millions of people, people committing disability fraud, etc but you get super worked up about one case where a family is trying to keep a child alive? lol

you imply that I only get to choose one thing to be annoyed with.....I would cancel all of that mess.

I'm just saying the level of response is a tad disproportionate given the things mentioned. Although, if you're playing the role of Ron Swanson, it all makes sense.

Are you serious? You realize taxpayers, not Congress, actually pays for this **** right? No wonder our overall debt is out of control. This isn't keeping their kid "alive".

I didn't know we have a budget expenditure now for "helping a grieving family" no matter what.

You realize she has been on machines for about 1 year? Do you know how expensive this care is?

You do realize the us government borrows like 40% of every dollar it spends right?
It's that attitude that will have us past 20 trillion in debt in just a few years.

Because the government is funded by the taxpayers. They aren't just throwing away invisible money, they're throwing away YOUR MONEY. You personally owe the world $56,332.06 right now, care of the national debt. We need to dial it back across the board, by stopping wasteful spending on everything from medicine to prisons to the military to corporate subsidies. If you let one kid like this slide, next thing you know you'll have dozens or hundreds of them. Full-time life support isn't cheap, nor is caring for the inevitable complications that arise.

So your solution to wasteful spending in this case, is other examples of wasteful spending. Do you know why **** like Obamacare is being implemented. Bc healthcare expenses are crowding out other parts of the budget - education, etc. Multiply this case by every other case in which the family wishes to keep that person on machines. Do u know how much that would cost?!!? Or do you not care?

He thought the govt. pays for **** not realizing it's taxpayers that keep the govt. running in terms of money. He's a gone case.

And it's people like him who would drive that number to 40 trillion.

He doesn't think the country will go bankrupt. He thinks we never have to pay our debt.

Never mind I quoted an old number..

It's more like 46% of every dollar spent we borrow as of 2014. That's insane!!
Do people not realize we won't be able to pay the interest in a few years yet alone pay any of that debt back?!

Transfer her under the care of ARNPs to cut the costs by a fourth!

The government gets its money from taxes? No way!

I'm not endorsing lifetime-long life support for everyone who wants it. I'm saying it's dumb to get so outraged over one case in which a family is desperate for some inkling of hope when there are much more egregious examples of the government wasting money. One kid on life support vs. two wars, funding other governments all over the world, paying military contractors 800 dollars for a screw driver, seems like a lot more to be worried about than this.
