Who should a dentist marry?.......Of course its going to be the one they fall in love with but that's not exactly the question i am asking here. Im thinking more of along the lines of CAREER($$$) and BRAINS(=decent IQ). I meen come on Im not shallow, but i dont exactly want to marry the manager of McD's just because he's nice......Being female I think its going to be difficult to find a man comfortable enough to marry a Dr...(being that he's not one) and maybe not bringing in the higher income. So who would be acceptable????
Teacher's or Police officers= not payed well, but well respected?
Lawyers or Engineers?(note: my Dentist is married to a Lawyer...pretty sweet for her huh!!!!! 🙄 !!!!)

Maybe you all could give me some insight on who you are marrying and how your spouse handles your career choice...or who would be an acceptable canidate!?!

Just something different here not trying to cause probs. on the sight...trying to think of new topics....

Sweet...

Come on guys seriously... 🙂

Well it depends what kind of a lifestyle you're looking for. High paying jobs for both people in the marriage can mean more disposable income, but then family life may take a hit.

Although I'm pre-med...I am from KY (which is why I'll answer you seriously) and I'm going to marry a teacher. The hours are good for her.

Go big KY....(thanx for ur reply 😛 )

Call me old fashioned but I think you should marry a person and not a job. I really don't care what her job is(within reason) as long as we are happy and she's willing to sign the prenup.

Oh man, come on! Prenup??? that's tight...

Im not really worried about the lifestyle (since im a independent woman) But im thinking more about (since Im Female) weighing out careers btwn husband and wife. For example: if a (female)dentist married a police officer...who would really wear the pants in the family ( Im not concerned with me making more money than him but he might be) does that help?

Exactly...."WITHIN REASON" What would you say within reason is?

hmmmmm.......................................................

Listen. I know a woman who married someone who she loved but she wasn't super excited about marrying him. But, her mom said he is a nice guy and has a good job and can support you. So she settled a little. Oh, and both are dentists. So I knew them through an ex because she was a dental assistant. We all hung out, not so much the wife because the guy she settled for would leave her with the kids and such. Anyways, my relationship with her got bad the last few years and figured she was cheating on me but had no real proof. i thought it was with the husband dentist too. I left and went into the army, got discharged after six months, and came back to see the wife about some dental work. At this point he left her and the kids. We became really good friends because of our experience and what we went through. I had nothing. Some college courses but, nothing tangible. Wanted to go to college but wanted to work to save money for it. She convinced me to take out loans. Always ecouraged me to be the person she knew I could be. Well, I fell in love with her and the kids, graduated Cum Laude with a major GPA of 3.82, and (because I procrastinated) got waitlisted at Tuft's but, WILL be getting in for 2007.

You can see by my long post that I have an opinion on this. Don't pick someone because of their job. It's better to be with someone good looking, who makes half as much, but will be with you and loyal for many many years. Or you could go for the guy who is a lawyer or doc or whatever because of his job and he can leave you with 3 kids and screw you over etc etc. Just be smart about it and don't make superficial decisions.

Well I think you need to be intellectually compatible with the person you end up with. I'd say that Professionals are usually happy with other Professionals. But of course intellect is not always reflected in a career.

As far as the woman being the professional and the husband being an average Joe, I could see that being a bit of a problem. He will undoubtedly at some point feel uncomfortable. I know a young couple in which the woman is a doctor and the man is a plumber. I admire them for being strong enough to overlook careers, but you have to think that at some point the poor guy is gonna feel "inadequate" at least on an intellectual level.

I totally agree with you. It's important to leave all externalities aside and focus on the person themselves. If you end up falling in love and that person happens to be making 6 figures, so be it. I was lucky in a sense because I met my girlfriend in undergrad where our "professional dreams" were in their infancy. So I guess we both knew in the back of our minds that that "earning potential" was there, but the important thing was that we hit it off as a couple. Now, people that have already graduated from professional schools may have to be a little bit more weary of "gold-diggers" (that btw can be both male and female) lol.

It doesn't matter if both go into it feeling comfortable about it. I don't feel weird that my girlfreind is a doc when I am in school. Good for her she makes money, I will too, but not now. I do other things at home that she can't so I do my part. If a guy feels inadequate it's because he is insecure. So it's not about the money its his personality.

Good story and point....its seem the good looking guys always cheat as do higher professional....but thats usually the ones that grow a ego/bighead, but some are and can be good husbands if they come out still living on earth (and not the higher planet of snob faces)

that was to take care of the suggestions of porn star, drug dealer, etc. which were bound to come up if i said i would marry anyone.

I am a pretty humble guy. But I will say forthe point of argument that I am a fairly decent looking guy, handsome based on others opinions. I will also be a professional. This doesn't mean at some point I will cheat. My experiences in life, a hard life, is what makes me loyal. Also, my girlfreind believing in me when I was a nobody means that she will have my loyalty forever. As Galen1 said, its harder when you are already a profesional and have to be weary of gold diggers. If I was in that situation I would lie and live somewhat below my means. Then I could see what was really out there.

Exactly, if I were a single Dentist, I'd avoid the "so what do u do" question until much later... hehehe

a person who is in the arts. ...usually, artists have wonderfull personalities, great imagination, creativity and knack for adventures. if you don't beleieve me, date one and see for yourself... 🙂 ..

FightingSpirit, you're kind of right. I don't think I'd ever be able to marry another dentist. I'd need a personality that complemented me, that could bring up another topic of conversation on the dinner table outside of the realm of teeth. Diversity is good 🙂

This is right on. My wife is a financial risk analyst, and neither of us has more than the vaguest understanding of what exactly the other does all day long. Since we can't gripe to each other about our work, it forces us to leave it at the school/office and talk about other stuff.

It seems that girls are always so worried about being cheated on. If thats the case, girls should just go out with someone ugly who will be faithful and loyal to them forever.

Or be single for life and adopt? 😀

Guess I like my independence.

Looks can't really tell you if someone's going to cheat... only that there may be more temptations. Look at the Jerry Springer Show. :meanie:

being single for life sounds pretty good. i enjoy my independence as well. as far as kids are concerned i'm not looking to have any =P

why not marry another dentist, like me?

i'm single and looking...

Here is an idea ... marry someone you love 😱

Seriously, to fall in love with someone and to marry him you have to connect in many levels, the intellectual level being one of them.. so at the end it is obvious you are not going to marry someone that you can’t connect with..
I'm not saying he has to be a dentist or in the medical field, but you know what I mean..

I will probably not like to marry another dentist, but it could happen...

But, I personally think people should marry someone that is or close to the same 'intellectual' level at least .. I am not worry about who would be making the most money ( I plan to be the one making the most anyways 😉 :meanie: ) ... how you guys think about your wife making for money than you?

I think I would marry a dentist or someone in health related field, because both of you will have similar goals and the understanding of each other's career. 🙂

love will happen when it happens..........

Don't mind if she makes more or less money. I see money as only a means to live or do things I love, but not one of my reasons for living. Was that too deep or corny? :meanie:

It seems that the ones that think it be great to marry a fellow dentist are those that have yet to start school. That will change once you begin. Most of the classmates I've talked to agree "anyone but another dentist" and faculties even warned us to "not marry another dentist, why do you think we take time out of our practice to teach? Get away from each other".

You'll be amazed at how low your standards will drop once you get to school (unless you didn't have any to begin with) and how many of your classmates just have absolutely zero personality.

I sit here and there are times where I feel the ephemeral shroud of madness descending slowly over me. I sometimes wish that I had only been brave enough to throw caution to the wind, follow my whim and passion, and let the dice fly high and land where they may. Instead I ploddingly joined rank and file mainstream bourgeosie Americanna....

Would I do differently? Probably not, but tinges of regret ebb and flow at times, and I read Hemingway, Krakauer, and Hunter S Thompson with a definitive more than passing longing.

I dont' dislike school because it's hard, at times I wish it were, then I would actually be challenged and kept too busy to reflect on these things. I dislike school for the hypocrisy of Academia, for the skull-numbing, forehead slapping douchebaggery that's present amongst my classmates, and the humdrum, repetitive, mental bulimia that marks the passing of each day. I drop my standards and engage in love affairs (real and imaginary) just to feel something, anything, besides the pedastrian pedantics.

Those of you that have yet to start won't get it at all and probably think that I'm crazy, but I hope that after you've started school, during some random week in the middle of the semester, you might vaguely recall this... and though you may still think of me as crazy, I hope that at least you will somewhat "get it". And if not, then I truly feel sad for you.

Usually artists don't have jobs. Food for thought.

i would love for my wife to make more than me. i figure if i'm a dentist i'll be pulling in at least $80,000 - $100,000, so if my wife can outdo me... that's friggin great... because we'd basically be rich.
