Who's applying to the least number of schools?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
5-8, tops. I'm only looking at schools in MD, VA, GA, PA, SC, NC, maybe TN.

I'm picky.

my friend is only applying to 1 school. it is one of the top 5 schools in the country. the funny thing is, she is going to get in.

Most the people I know are applying to 0. Then again, they aren't premeds or if they are, are switching to dentistry or law.

I was waiting for a more smartass-sounding "1, EDP! LOLOLOL I'M FUNNY," post. Damn it, tredici.

what is EDP? and I wish I had the luxury of applying to just a few, i'm sick of secondaries

Applied to five myself....and I've gotten more than my share of the "you are insane" comments....

A friend of mine applied to one school two years ago (UCSF) and got in. I think the combination of URM, 40S/4.0 (from UCLA) made that a pretty safe bet but still...

holy smokes 👍

I have a friend who only applied to two- Case Western and Ohio State- and got accepted at both. He chose Case Western. But he did have really good stats and EC's.

Well, not me.. but I know one of the nurses I work with applied to only one school last year- Northwestern. She got in.. but now she's not even sure she wants to go anymore!

I'm doing 8 total, but only 6 are really in my league (due to OOS numbers)

1 🙂 My mama works in the pharm school (yay nepotism!) & no way I'm wasting $ applying to other schools without taking a postbacc first with my stats 🙂. But I'll probably have to reapply in 2008 so I'm not going to worry too much about it 🙂

I'm applying to 1, and I can barely afford to do that one.

I think I win this (see sig). My undergrad school and a few others in the Boston area have an early acceptance program with TUSM.

most people in Kentucky only apply to two or one, UK and U of Louisville.

This thread is so funny, because outside the world of pre-meds, I don't know many others who would apply to such a large number of schools. The numbers listed so far on this thread actually seem normal, and some even high, for other graduate or professional schools. My sister, an MBA student, "suggested" that I apply to three schools, maybe four, just in case, prior to my introduction to the vortex that is sdn. I almost just took her word for it and picked out four schools. Fast forward three months and I'm applying to over thirty schools...okay, so maybe I'm on the high end of number of apps even for med school, but I sure am glad I didn't just apply to four schools.

People outside of SDN often have delusions of granduer about this process too. Would you want that as well?

For real!!! Everyone I know that is applying are ONLY applying to these. It must be a Kentucky phenomenon.

Thats because there are about 350 kentucky residents that apply to MD schools. UK/UofL swallow about 190-200 of them (out of 260 total students). Pikeville (DO) gets the rest, and the really super dooper competitive ones (relatively few) obviously go wherever. Its just good odds.

can anyone confirm if applying to the few schools will also give you reapplicant status to schools you didnt apply to for the next following cycle if in fact you get rejected.

I like this thread! I really feel less alone now... it's good to have some pseudo-support 🙂 I, too, was getting a little tired of hearing about people applying to 20+ schools because it makes me feel like I'm not going to get in anywhere 🙁

I'm applying to 7 schools, all in California, because of location. I realize that this sucks because of which state I'm in, but I'd rather reapply than apply broadly now and spend the next 4 years OOS.

Yeah, I'm only applying to 2 (UK and UofL) but that's mostly because my stats really aren't good enough for OOS. I could go for a masters to raise my stats and then apply to a bunch of other schools, but I don't really want to practice anywhere but KY anyway. I guess us KY folks really like the state or something.

I'm applying 8. I feel like I might be competitive for my home state (OUHSC) and that if I just so happen to get in anywhere else... then what a pleasant surprise!

I am only applying to one. Doing EDP to my state school. Good luck to all other single digit applicants.

I'm not sure this is true. A lot of other graduate programs don't have the primaries/secondaries (it's just one app per school), interviews etc. in the process, so it's actually a lot less work to apply to more places. You see the same kind of shotgun approach in law and probably many other fields.

The national average is to apply to 12 schools. If your stats are well above average and you apply smart, you can get away with fewer applications than that. If your stats are more borderline, or you want to take a lot of longshots, you have to apply to more places. It is more expensive to be average or below -- Such is life.

Even if you had those stats, why would you not want to hedge your bets, or at least give yourself a couple of choices to decide between? We've all seen absurdly qualified people who don't get their first choice. I'd say most of the top stats folks I know didn't even get all of their top three.

Hey, I applied last cycle to 6 allo schools and got into 2. I didn't realize people applied to so many until I came to SDN, so don't feel like you're crazy! There weren't that many schools I would actually want to attend.

I think its due to hubris.

If so, if I were a Dean, this is exactly the kind of arrogance I would want to screen out, I would think. At the interview when she's asked where else she's applying, and she says something to the effect of "nowhere -- I don't really need to"... I could see this turning out ugly. It's almost worth applying elsewhere just to have a better answer to this question.

I am just applying to one school 👍 ...already had my interview too...just now have to wait about three months to hear back...😴

4.

3 Allo and 1 Osteo.

that's pretty much the situation my friend is in...

That's still f'ing ballsy. I mean, the URM thing helps for the UC system no matter what, but UCSF is so bizarre about who they choose that I've seen them not even give interviews to 40+ MCATs. IDKWTFBBQ. So 👍 for your friend with the 4.0/40 but I imagine that could still have had the possibility of blowing up in his/her face and wouldn't recommend being that bold as a general rule. 😀
