Is anyone going to keep shadowing after applying? Is it really worth it? It boring after a point and I feel I would just be getting into the way of the dentist and staff. Anyone care to disagree?

Technically, there is no reason to keep shadowing unless:

1. You don't get accepted
2. You want to keep getting experience so you have more stuff to talk about in your interview
3. Similar to number 2, if you want to be able to tell the school you actually have more shadowing hours than when you applied (to prove that this is a continual process)
4. You're volunteering at a place that counts on you

In my opinion, once you're ACCEPTED though, it's not terribly helpful unless you are getting some actual hands-on experience. In fact, I'm in dental school now and continue to volunteer at a clinic I've been helping at since the year I applied to dental school.

I'm still shadowing a bit, despite applying. 🙄

Technically, shadowing and volunteering are not required for most dental schools - it is only recommended. If you feel you've done enough shadowing or volunteering, then you're the only person that can determine this. Personally, I still volunteer and shadow because I continue to learn new things through them.

Anyway, you've determined that shadowing is boring, which isn't to be confused with losing interest in dentistry (I assume). I understand the perspective that you probably want a more hands-on experience rather than observational experience. Maybe a job as a dental assistant in the future? In my opinion, I think you should take a break from shadowing for now...

Good luck with everything!

I'm going to keep shadowing, but at different general offices. It's actually pretty interesting seeing how differently some practices are run.

How many hours of shadowing have you completed so far? If you have a lot, its def pointless.
