Who's Ranking TCOM #1 in Texas

Just out of mere curiousity who else besides me is ranking TCOM 1st out of the Texas medical schools.

I also interviewed at UTMB, TA&M, and TTech

...either you don't have much competition or there aren't many Texans on this board...!

Either way, I think if you liked TCOM enough to rank it first, then I think you will be happy here. It isn't perfect, but it's a great school and turns out great docs. Students and faculty alike are truly KIND to each other (most of the time), and are friendly and supportive in very genuine way.

The faculty are (for the most part) excellent. It is not uncommon for faculty to circulate in the library the day before a test to answer any last-minute questions in person. That blows me away every time.

Best of luck to you, and try to relax before match day--but I know how hard that is!

I visited this campus...and I loved it! The people are the friendliest people I think! They will go out of their way to help you.

I really liked this school and once I get ready to apply, this is one of the schools I will be considering.

I wrote this down at my interview...I don't have the exact #s in front of me but I think it is something like 1200 apply, 450 get interviewed and ~225 get submitted to the match make the class of ~120+ students. So, if you get an interview at TCOM then you have at least a 50% shot of getting in I think.

Did you interview there? What did you think?

Really??? What isn't "perfect" about it? What kind does KIND mean? Very genuine??? Friendly??? "For the most part" what's "great" about it?

What's not perfect at TCOM (of what I know so far): the gym (it's very small and old--but we got some new treadmills!), the building that now blocks our gorgeous panoramic view of downtown (but its a huge new research bldg, so I guess that's good), some of the lecturers are past their prime (but most are very good), OMM teaching/organization.

What's great at TCOM: the dedication of the faculty to teaching, the anatomy lab (very high tech), good research opportunities, the friendliness of staff, faculty and students, the integrated systems-based curriculum.

"Kind" meaning people will often send e-mails to the whole class with charts, links to helpful websites, study aids; people smile and say hello to each other in the corridors; everyone is very supportive and pulls together to help each other out (our classmates individually pitched in$2000 to help out a classmate in need, for example).

I know that my wife really liked the school a lot. I know that she is ranking it high also!!! I like the idea of moving there as well!!! 😀

Just about 24 more days until "hopefully" we know!!

Holy Crap I'm going to have a nervous breakdown before the match!

I went back to TCOM several months ago after I interviewed to shadow one of the surgeons there, and at that point I just knew TCOM was the right place for me.

I just hope I didn't give the surgeon the wrong impression when he asked me if I prefered osteopathy over allopathy. I told him that it really didn't matter, rather it would be the actual school itself being the deciding factor for my case. he told me that that was the wrong answer, but aside that I feel pretty confident about my chances of matching.

Should I have lied and said osteopathy or was I right to tell the truth?

I think docs say things sometimes just to see how you will react. Don't worry about all of this though. Just know that ALL of us have something that we could fixate on that isn't right about our application, or something we said in an interview or whatever. There is plenty that we all could freak out on and worry ourselves to death. Appreciate the experience for the experience itself...it must have been pretty cool to shadow a surgeon, I've never done that!

You did fine in answering honestly. There are some old school DOs who for some reason have this chip on their shoulders about osteopathy. I knew I wanted to be a DO, but if I had not had a good experience at my TCOM interview, I would have made another choice. You have to go where you feel most comfortable. Having said that, you also have to be comfortable with the fact that you will be forever and ever a DO and not an MD, with all the good and bad that comes with it.

The admissions committee is responsible for the decision. If you had a good interview, that's all you really need. As long as you ranked TCOM high on your list, you have an excellent chance of matching here.

Try to breathe. It's almost here....🙂
