2024-2025 University of North Texas Health Science Center/Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNTHSC/TCOM)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The AACOMAS school will usually have a deadline by which you must pay a deposit or lose the seat.
At this moment the TMDSAS place is in your hands.
By the time of the AACOMAS school’s deposit deadline you must decide about the DO school.
I've already paid the deposit for the AACOMAS school many months ago and now I matched to TCOM. So my question is, what is the official deadline to withdraw from the AACOMAS school?

Let’s talk about Tcom as a whole. What do you guys like about it and what you don’t like. Anything specific that incoming students should know about it?
Likes - Love the overall vibe. It seems like we have a good mix of people so you can really find a good friend group. All of the students in my grade help each other with resources and study tips. Very collaborative. There are always clubs and groups having activities so if you want to be really involved on campus you can but if not thats also ok. Its Honors Pass Fail which I love because it takes away a lot of stress of grades. There is ALWAYS free food on campus which is great haha. Professors are great and responsive. We also have advisors within our advisory colleges so lots of support there. There are lots of resources and ways to be involved. Most of the time you can study from home which is good but we also have optional in person lectures if you like the group environment. I guess what Im trying to say is TCOM has so many options and can really be what you make of it. Be involved or stay home all day either way you can pass classes and be a doctor 🙂

Cons - Sometimes I feel like we have a lot of busywork. Random quizzes or classes that dont really mean anything but are required to do. We will have some mandatory lectures about Emotional intelligence and Im just like ok ill do some flashcards lol. The schedule is FAST as in every single monday in February we have had an exam 😱 its been pretty stressful so sometimes I feel like if i miss one day of studying I cant catch up. Another thing that is a pro and a con is the big class size. It is about 240-250 students per class which is a ton! Pro is you can make lots of friends but con is its hard to be personal with some professors and some resources can go fast if you are slow to get it.

TCOM is a great school but no medical school is perfect. It really is what you make of it! Let me know if yall have other questions or more specific questions.

Thanks for the detailed info. It really puts us incoming students’ minds to ease.

Follow up question in general. How are the residency matches, is it easy or difficult to get matched to speciality that you are interested in?

No worries! From what I have seen, we match well for a DO school. There is the normal (frustrating) bias against certain specialties for DOs but students from TCOM are sought after for residency positions especially in Texas. We have residency programs come and talk to first and second year students all the time (again more free food) and say we love students from here please come to our program. I dont think I will have any issues with matching! (fingers crossed hahah)

I matched to TCOM, but have not yet accepted the offer. I know that accepting the offer is binding. However, if I later decide to attend an OOS school, would that be possible or am I committed to TCOM?

You can accept it now and if accepted later to an OOS school you prefer, you may withdraw from your space here.
Be sure to catch the date by which TCOM wants your confirmation

thank you so much!! A bit of a side note, but where do most students stay in terms of housing?

No worries! I think a lot of people will choose to stay close to campus. I know the Marq, lofts at West 7th, Monticello, and other places are popular. People will post about housing and stuff on the housing and sale facebook page. But everyone does everything like people will live an hour away and do mostly online but I like going in person to classes so I like being closer.

Do yall feel like a letter of intent is worth it? Or do they go just by order on the waitlist?

TCOM has selected their next dean:

My HSC portal still shows that my application is still active even after receiving an R, does this mean anything?

Current first year students - what is your typical schedule Mon through Fri? Is there a pattern for when the mandatory stuff is scheduled throughout the week i.e. you have mornings to study because mandatory things are 1-5pm or anything like that? Or vice versa? Thank you

To be honest it can change pretty frequently. We normally have OMM every tuesday afternoon and another clinical class. We also have Physical exam class on Fridays. Other than that though, lectures, quizzes, tests, and other things can pretty much be any day in the morning or afternoon.

does TCOM accept a letter of intent?
It's always best to ask the school, but I know people who did, and the response from the school was that they were going to attach it to their file. Based on previous years' threads, there is a lot of debate on whether or not these letters mean anything in the grand scheme of things, more leaning towards the idea that it will not affect ranking that has already been established. At the same time, if it makes your heart happy and it's a genuine letter that you are proud of, send it if it makes you feel like "I've done everything I can at this point and I have that peace of mind"

Omg ok… when I replied earlier about the letter of intent I actually came on here to tell y’all that I got off the WL end of last week (but with Easter and everything I was mostly offline and rejoicing). I typed it up and somehow it didn’t post. I’m IS. Very grateful. This is a second chance for me. Also local to DFW. I don’t know anyone else but I did notice a few folks joined the group so either they also just got off the WL or simply joined the group at a random time. For those interested, there was movement though; just that none of us posted I guess … I know what it’s like to watch the forums for news; sorry I didn’t contribute earlier…

When sending a LOI, do we just send to the admissions email that they prompt for any questions? Or upload it to the portal somehow?

Also, if anyone in here has advice for someone who is on the waitlist and is very hopeless/ planning to reapply right now I would really appreciate it! PM me or something. I just don’t know where i went wrong the first time and don’t know how to figure it out. Thanks in advance!

Check out the TMDSAS/ THES YouTube channel - they recently posted a video with reapplicant tips.
Several of the TMDSAS schools hosted reapplicant workshops in March and April, did you get any emails about those or attend any?

I will checkout the youtube channel! I did go to two reapplicant workshops— they were more presentation/ Slides based that could apply to first time applicants in my opinion. it was nice information to have reinforced but it wasn’t very specific!

Do we have to buy books OR can we find them online for free? Estimate cost of books during first year if so?
Also, has any out of state been able to pay in state tuition cost (approx. half) after their first year?
