I am wondering if there's any reason why people are so obsessed with sending frivolous updates in hope that schools will send them an II. It just sounds so illogical.

Most people who applied in July haven’t gotten any kind of news from schools in up to/more than three months and are starting to feel nervous about the lack of communication. I don’t necessarily agree with updates unless they’re substantial, but I don’t think you should be calling them all illogical or frivolous.
Also, I think your perception of this process may be skewed by your quick turnaround thus far (congrats on your IIs!). Nonetheless, it is important to understand that not everybody is having success so soon after submitting their applications, and may be getting worried.
Frivolous updates won't get you II's any sooner. Ergo, the thought that updating with frivolous facts will get you II's sooner is illogical. All I am saying is that what they do is only adding more worry and stress on top of this uncertain process.
precisely! but the effect is more anxiety. Such as should I send one or not, how should I send it, how will they perceive it, is it too insignificant, will that affect my application negatively, you name it. That's why I really don't think it's a good idea to send any update unless it's truly amazing and significant and you will really get noticed for that. Short of that, it really only makes you look desperate.I’m sure that many applicants don’t think that their updates are frivolous. Or, sometimes, the updates are actually substantial and may help.
In either case, I can empathize with a stressed out applicant who may not have heard from many/any programs yet and who thinks that updates may help them “get noticed”. I’m sure these applicants are thinking of sending updates to ease their worries—not heighten them.
It will only make you look unprofessional.
