I dont really understand why most DO programs are more expensive than MD programs!!

OOS for MSUCOM is rediculous and even NYCOM is more expensive than some MD schools in NY.

Profit, even if they claim to be non-profit. Pure and simple. The reason for MSU is because they want to recoup the state's money. I don't see a problem with it, but then again I'm a Michigan resident.

private vs public. tax money substitutes for the extra cost. most DO schools are private, simple as that.

While is is true that most DO schools are private, the ones that are public (such as MSUCOM) still need to recoup the taxes that normal in-state people pay from out-of-state applicants. Another reason (this this is a little less intuitive) is that most DO schools are significantly younger than most MD schools. Also, DOs usually go into primary care and make a lot less money over their career than most specialists will. I'll give an example to help illustrate why this is so important. Since Harvard has been around since before America was founded, they have well over 200 years of wealthy alumni giving to their school foundation. A DO school, founded around 1975 or so, pumping out primary care physicians who want to work in underserved (i.e. poor) communities, just simply does not have the money stocked away earning interest for scholarships and grants that an MD school might.

I hope this sheds some light on why DO schools can be a bit more expensive that MD schools.

My school is private, and the annual tuition for out of state is $26,500. Can't beat that.

I don't think looking at the tuition is really the best way to dictate things. I prefer average debt numbers across a couple of years. There are always a few people that get a bunch paid off by parents or whatever, but those people are probably outliers in a 100+ person class.

BKPA, please tell me your sig quote is from the episode where Christopher and Paulie lose that guy in the woods and Paulie swears he took care of him. That's my favorite Sopranos episode of all time.
