Why Are People So Uptight On SDN

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I actually say its due to the forum mods. Some of them take their "jobs" super-cereal and go on account/thread banning/locking sprees. Its a huge pain in the ass to access this site via proxy if they decide to IP ban you (and they <3 that), so most of us just come here for information instead of fun.

Prime example here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=604543

I thought that thread was pretty lol.

yeah its really unfortunate that the mods are fun nazis. and they think everyone is a "troll." i mean, this forum is consists of 3 types of threads:
1) official secondary/acceptances (somewhat useful)
2) the "omg, will (blank activity) help me get into med school" (pretty painful to read)
3) the "omg, i just got a C in orgo, D, in bio, do i still have a chance?" (also known as the how many ways can other people tell you no and for you to still not listen thread")

 Then you get other occasional posts like this that are either closed or moved (which kills the thread anyway - no one is in the all-purpose forum!).

They love to ban - whatever happened to ChubbyChaser or Jurassicpark? They were hilarious...

Why are people so uptight on SDN? I mean there are a lot of people who can't even take a joke? I know we are all in pursuit of a career and thats something to take serious but come on loosen up. Just say F*** the world.

Somehow, just saying "F*** the world" became less fun as I grew older. I don't think it's just the pursuit of "a career" that makes people so serious, it's the pursuit of this career.

<sigh>

The point of the forum moderators is to a) make sure that irrelevant threads are moved elsewhere, so as to make the relevant info more easily accessible, and b) prevent threads from degenerating into immature chaos.

If you don't want to read the "serious" threads in the pre-allopathic forum, then either go to the All-Students or Lounge forums, or go to other websites on the internet that are designed only for random gossip/chatter/etc.

Because you clearly are not biased. At all.

Your interpretation of "immature chaos" is a little too liberal for the internet.

You think the mods dont do a good job then eh? Ban more people, put mroe accounts on hold?

...Fail.

If the mods were too liberal...they would let more stuff slide. Being conservative means they already ban and hold too many.

Personally, I think its a slippery slope. How far are you willing to let things degenerate until you have people making this an unproductive and unhelpful website. Better to clean and move the muck along, so SDN can serve its core constituency and fulfill its ideal objectives.

A+ thread, would read again.

A liberal interpretation of immaturity would include more cases that sholdnt be grouped with it. A conservative one would include less. You fail.

And it isnt a slippery slope by any means, it just requires people to loosen up a little bit. But the site is what it is and it is pretty resistant to major policy changes, so meh. I guess it makes sense since if it wasnt so heavily moderated it would scare some people away (like that one guy on the UCLA thread).

Alright fine, I fail.

I don't know. I mean, I think the mods probably chime in with "be nice" or "no attacking people" reminders/warnings a little too often (but not WAY too often)... but, in terms of when they suspend or ban people... I can say that I've been suspended twice, and both times I really deserved it... And I've written some pretty controversial things far more than twice (more like twice a day).

They probably also have to (or at least feel like they have to) say or do SOMETHING "modish" every once in a while, to justify their being mod's... Makes sense, I can see why they'd do that. When I put myself in their shoes, I see myself feeling somewhat of a need to do that as well.

What's way more "conservative" and outrageous to me is the way that so many people so aggressively protect their identity on here and on mdapplicants.com (by not including their college, etc)... I mean, seriously, we're all real people and we're all premeds (or med students, or doctors)... There's a good chance that we will at some point in our careers come across several of the people we exchange thoughts or opinions with on here... Call me crazy, but I think it'd be kind of cool to know who they were when I saw them.

I understand staying anonymous to a certain extent, but I think it is a little ridiculous when people will only say "a top 15 institution" as if everyones goal on here is to identify them.

agreed! some mods do take their job way to far kinda like the nerdy hall monitor that has no friends and he makes everyone his enemy by handing out detention slips(i know random).

Somebody's pampers need changin'. Why do you care so much? If you act like an adult then you'll be treated like one.

El oh el at this whole thread.

Dexter style???

At this point we are actually having a (relatively) productive conversation. At the point when Bacchus made a comment, it was essentially a thread of a resident picking on the OP premed (no matter how easy/attractive the OP may have made himself to be picked on, which is a completely separate issue)...

As long as it stays a civil expression of concerns/views on the Mods, I don't see them closing it...

It will just validate the thread if it gets closed

There is doom and gloom when things go boom, on SDN!

For some reason I can't quote CRB.

If people didn't have the option to hide their college on mdapps, more people would lie about mcat/gpa in case they got identified.

lol

15, 35, 45...these are all random numbers people. Using a number like that identifies you more than you think. 😛

Basically- I am so uptight on here because it is the only place I somewhat can talk about these things. Kids at school will just be like..haha your FINE as long as you have over a 3.0!

Fine doing what exactly?

Basket Weaving I guess

Oh, burn!:meanie:

To clarify for everyone else: I'm sure there are tons of people with 3.0s getting in, but I'm also sure they're either picking their schools very wisely or have impressive ECs/life-stories/numbers/???/alloftheabove to make up the difference.

Don't be fooled - it's underwater basket weaving that's the killer one!😉

You know that is hilarious because during my college orientation they mentioned that exact class...to this day I don't know if its even a real class😕😕😕 Can't be!

Like MilkmanAl! He killed the MCAT and got in which was pretty badass

Actually, I did underwater basket weaving in elementary school.

But for usage history, see the nice wikipedia entry.

I don't think they are just uptight on SDN. I think it's just their personality, and unfortunately, they feel the need to lash out at others in order to feel better. Misery needs company I always say. :meanie: 😉

But why? That's the whole thing I'm talking about. I certainly am on the lower-end of the gpa and mcat spectrum on here, particularly among those who have been accepted... yet it never occured to me that I might want to hide my identity or inflate my numbers...

It's the whole idea of not wanting to be identified that doesn't make sense to me... I'd understand if there were a couple paranoid people doing it, but the desire for privacy and anonymity just seems so pervasive. If you're proud of who you are, then there's no reason to believe a med school adcom seeing what you write on here would have more of a negative impact than a positive one on your application... and with regard to people wanting to remain anonymous to fellow classmates that might recognize them from their profiles (if they gave accurate/full information)... I have NO idea why they do this...

... but it would appear I'm in the minority on this issue.

Some people are just more comfortable operating under some degree of anonymity (especially on the internet). It might not make sense to everyone, but it is a personal choice.

I'm thinking more about current college classmates. Some people do not like sharing grades and test scores with their classmates. But in terms of med school classmates, I can definitely see people judging their classmates based on MCAT scores. I mean, even in college, people talk about not understanding how some people got in. Obviously, as the years progress it becomes less of an issue, but still.

Right... But still, there's clearly just some component of the desire for anonymity and secrecy that I'm not able to appreciate. I guess that's just my own problem. 🙂

But forgetting about my personal preference either way, it just doesn't make fundamental sense to me... Maybe I can understand the secrecy on mdapplicants, but not SDN (and many people don't share their mdapps on their SDN profile, but still are very private about their identity on SDN)... And it's not that I don't KNOW the arguments in favor of being anonymous/secretive... I've heard them... but it still suprises me that SO MANY people choose to be secretive about their identity.

Oh well.

ChubbyChaser is just on probation I think, I saw him posting around somewhere the other day.

My only real beef with the moving of the threads is that sometimes the topics may not be "pre-allo" specific, true, but if a pre-allo person is posting it, they may only want to hear from those people. (No offense to anyone)

You know for somebody who tells people to act like adults you dont do such a good job takin your own advice. What kind of grown women watches wrestling?
