So I am very interested in working in EM and/or General Surgery. I have heard from many people that there a many DOs in EM but General Surgery is kind of hard to get into. Why is this? Why are there just more DOs in EM?

Also random question - do DOs get paid less than MDs? Are DO schools cheaper than MD schools?

Thanks! I'm kind of new to this!

Why? Nobody knows, and it's probably not important. The fact is, there are relatively more DOs in EM compared to some other specialties. Maybe this is because EM PDs tend to have more laid back, practical personalities compared to say... GSurg, and therefore don't care about stupid **** like what someone's degree is.

No, and no.

General surgery is losing its appeal because of overhead costs, time commitment, and declining salaries. Including the AOA residencies, there are a fair number of DOs in general surgery. Its still competitive, but not as competitive as it once was.

Yes, I agree with you all. EM is a great career and those programs don't care about the degree as much. Dermatology and neurosurgery tend to be biased towards M.D., but D.O. still practices these residencies as well.

Pay is essentially the same, and cost of school is the same. As a matter of fact, there are some D.O. schools that cost WAY WAY more than some M.D. schools. 😎

Someone should make a search function or write up some faqs .....

dude, seriously. these "can DOs even practice medicine after they graduate and complete a residency and pass all their boards?" questions are getting old and lame

it's only bc of a stigma that is slowly dying

Hmmmmmm.... if you pick a few choice schools you would be right. However, and it's been shown in previous threads, the average cost of attending private MD schools is higher than the cost of attending private DO schools. Please, do your homework before making a statement like that.
