Why can't I send a message?

I am new to this forum/website. I need help edit my personal statement. I tried to message the people on the 2016-2017 reader list. However, whenever I clicked "Enter", there would be a error message saying "Please enter valid message." I am not sure what I did wrong. The message was just, "Hi, I am applying this year and wondering if you could help edit my personal statement." Please advise what I should do. Thanks!
