Why did YOU choose pharmacy? ['11 edition]

I got accepted in Cornell-CAS and St. John's Pharmacy 0-6. After much debate, research, thought between Pharmacy (SJUP) and Medicine (Cornell), I decided to pursue pharmacy. A thread that truly did help into convincing me that pharmacy is absolutely what I want was a former "Why did YOU choose pharmacy?" thread from '09.

These types of topic are truly refreshing so I thought we should make a '11 one too.

So why did YOU choose pharmacy?
 
I never thought about pharmacy until I work in a pharmacy. Mostly, I was inspired by my pharmacy manager with his kindness. I am really impressed by the way he counseled patient about medications. That's it. ^^
 
I became very attracted to the lifestyle that the Pharmacist title offers. I want the money, the vacation, the benefits, etc...

Yea yea... I know, "These are not the right reasons" I have lurked her for many months and I know the prevailing opinion is about how someone should feel.

But the bottom line is, I find myself in a position where I have almost 10 years of retail management experience, and a 3.9 GPA in science.. Put the two together and what do you get? A Pharmacist!

Unfortunately I never got to persue my "dreams". Strange thing is, I have aspired to be a long haul truck driver my entire life.. That is my dream. But - Alas!! My wife will not allow me to become a truck driver.

So - I have decided to make the rest of my working life about making money the easy way, and not pursuing my dreams.. Makes sense to me!

I wanted to do something in the medical field ever since my parents gave me an old copy of Gray's Anatomy when I was a kid. I wanted to be a trauma surgeon (I have no idea wtf I was thinking, honestly). In high school, I started volunteering at a local hospital and shadowing docs & nurses. And it was disgusting. So I switched my volunteer hours to the pharmacy. And it was awesome.
 
B/c I get to where a white coat and it makes me feel important.
 
For access to beautiful, intelligent women duh! I have four years to work my magic and so far, I have been quite successful :meanie:

Pharmacy is a career that I definitely see expanding in the next few years. I believe pharmacists will have a more active and direct role in ensuring that their patients receive the best treatment possible. I want to be apart of this and also gain a vast knowledge and understanding of the body and the effects that drugs have on the body. Everything is a mystery but not to you unlock hidden secrets of the body mind and spirit, that is when is you can truly say you have done a good work. Sorry if I sounded rather philosophical.

Not to be crass, but I am not too fond of these types of threads. I see lurkers coming on here, and picking up bits and pieces here and there and incorporating it into a completely false personal statement.

Do you have a problem with the false personal statement or that they are getting help here? (or both)

You can only be so honest with an admissions committee, imo.

True, true. I even expressed interest in a residency which I have no desire to pursue. I think I even mentioned clinical pharm and MGM or whatever it's called. I really want to work at a Wal*Mart though so I can shop low prices when I clock out lol

I have a problem w/ the help for the most part, but I do have a problem with a completely untrue personal statement (eg - there mom wants them to be a pharmacist, and that's the only reason)

And as a side note, I think I was pretty honest w/ my personal statement.

Also another side note, I pursued dentistry prior to pharmacy only b/c my mom wanted me to be one.... hence the example I gave.

I see your point, but anyone with half a brain can BS their personal statement if they choose to do so. Throwing together bits and pieces of other people's personal statements isn't a good way to write one anyway.

Good way to brainstorm though... and I just hope this thread doesn't help people with less than half a brain BS a decent PS, which it shouldn't b/c the majority of posts weren't in depth enough anyways.

Ahh I see your point. Personally, this would be of no value for me since I'm already got accepted to a Pharm school. But I totally see your point.

As I said, in my first post, these topics actually helped me firmly decide that i want to be a pharmacist.

And I thought that usually interviewers could see right through if someone is lying or not.

I know what owle said was being sarcastic, but let's turn this thing around for a second.

I don't see why money can't make you happy. Some people are absolutely driven by it, and are both happy and successful.

My dad grew up with nothing, and he's an absolute workaholic with nothing on his mind, but dollar bills. He hates his job, but has been there for over 30 years. And generally speaking, he is living a happy life.
 
Money can't make you happy, but you can't be happy without money.
