Ok, so I have been to 5 interviews now and I have one more left at my state school UW (University of Washington). DMU was my most recent interview. Now I have to say that I have been reading SDN posts forever on how to choose the school you want to attend and it always came down to Board scores, Board pass rates and Match lists for me. However, everyone always mentions that the school you should attend must feel right. I always balked at these statements thinking they were to emotional and not rantionally sound reasons. I came away from my first 4 interviews having really liked each of the programs and found myself leaning towards NSU. However as the taxi pulled up outside of DMU and I walked in it was like a freakin thunderbolt!! KABAMMM! The entire day confirmed it. Yes I can still rationalize why DMU rules the medical world: Amazing Board scores, great pass rates and an impressive match list but man when you feel it you'll know. Now I think, why would I go to NSU where I am forced to attend, I have to wear scrubs (not so bad) and must rotate through a known unfriendly DO state. Plus I can't afford to live in Southern Florida. DMU on the other hand has no dress code, doesn't require me to attend and even tapes their lectures. Plus Des Moines is affordable and is in a part of the country where DO's are very highly recieved. Enough of my rambling though.........when you feel it you'll know. Peace

Hello!
I am planning to submit my AACOMAS application tonight and DMU is one of the few schools that I am applying to, mainly because of the sentiments you expressed. It's not too late to submit my AACOMAS, is it? I know I'm already at a disadvantage applying so late but is DMU especially difficult because of their admission policy? I hope not...

While it would have been best that you applied earlier, it is not too late. DMU's secondary is painless. Just keep in mind that DMU has a "cutoff" sGPA of 3.0. Best of luck with AACOMAS submission, secondaries, and all that really fun stuf.

Thanks Hema, I just pm'd ya

I LOVED DMU but no thunderbolt, I must admit...Maybe I was too stressed out to notice it, though! I'll have to go back for a visit and see if I can find it. 😳

I absolutely loved DMU when I was there, and they offered me my first, and thus far only, acceptance. I, however, am legally blind, and I am going to have to speak to some people at DMU to see how comfortable they make me feel in terms of being able to make it through their program. I do not have the luxury of taking the usual myriad considerations in mind when choosing a med school to attend.

I interviewed at Western U last week, and I know for a fact I would be fine there, because they graduated a completely blind individual.

So yeah, at this point, my heart is with DMU, but I do not know if it will be a practical choice as of yet.

I had the same experience and to this day still have no regrets. Lovin' my time here at DMU. Especially after the Biochem final today. So glad it's over.
👍 👍
It's anatomy and sleepy time. 😴

I feel the same way with you Fiz...DMU impressed me. Even though I only have AZCOM to compare to, I believe DMU is a great school. I cancelled all my other interviews because I felt DMU was a great school and I didn't need to waste my time/money visiting other schools. I'm just waiting though, on whether I got in or not. The longer I wait, the more I go over my inteview and stress over my responses (GRRRRRRRR). Anyhow I hope to find out this week if I got into DMU.

The lighting has struck and consider me singed!!!

which is making my choice between them very difficult. I am wanting to go into Radiology and MCW placed 12 graduates into radiology residencies compared to 2 for DMU. Hopefully I will make the right choice.

This has more to do with the class and who wanted to match into what program. I'm also very interested in Radiology and am confident DMU will prepare me to smoke the boards so I can compete in Rads which is a very difficult residency program to match into. It all depends on the particular class. Perhaps last year not many students at DMU actually wanted Rads.

I have an interview next month at DMU. I was just wondering what's it like in De Moines? Since I'm born and raised in NYC, I'm not sure if I can survive in Iowa. What was it about DMU that striked you the most??

The school feels like a million bucks and the vibe is one of excitement and enthusiasm. It was also the only school where tons (and I mean a lot) of students came up out of nowhere and spoke with me and made me feel really welcome. Everything is state of the art and they don't seem to treat there students like little children who don't know what they are doing. Some schools gave me the impression that they don't trust you to make your own choices. DMU empowers you. Also their amazing surgery center just got me so excited to practice medicine (and I was never really interested in surgery). Go have fun. I thought Des Moines was big enough that when you have free time (which will be rare I'm told) you will have no problem finding something to do.

I'm currently a 1st year at DMU. When I drove into Des Moines the night before my interview, I swear to God that I saw the largest, longest meteorite (Is that the right one? Or is it meteor or asteroid, or who knows?) blaze right across the night sky as I drove in on I -235. I was already pumped for the interview to begin with, but that was one helluva sign for me.

To the OP:

Glad to see you pumped about DMU. I know exactly what you are talking about as I felt the same. DMU was my first interview, and it was the best experience ever. EVERYONE is SO nice --all the faculty, admissions staff, and students. I felt so comfortable the entire time during my interview day. Additionally, the facilities are top notch which makes the school look AMAZING. If you have an interview at DMU, I really do suggest that you don't cancel it because "it's in Iowa." I wouldn't be surprised if all of a sudden DMU moves from any part of your list to top choice! The OP is right. You just FEEL it's THE school. DMU has all that makes a school great (excellent board scores, matchlist, etc.) and more!

I'm a first year at DMU and have even met some of you as I have done some tour guides. It's great to hear all of the positive feedback about DMU. All of te students really are very nice and I can't say enough about the school. I too got that feeling at my interview and that feeling hasn't left.
About Des Moines, I came from San Diego and was a little concerned about the size of the city as well. But, there are things to do wit your spare time. You don't have a lot of free time, but you do have some and I'm sure you can always find something. Personally, I like to go to the gym pretty regularly and our school has a brand new, amazing facility. Feel free to ask me, jbone, jamers or It'selectric any questions. we are usually on here everyday, usually during lecture😀
By the way... I don't think I've met you---> It'selectric.

DMU was my first interview as well and I also felt really comfortable at the school 👍 ....glad to hear that other people feel the same way...makes for a better learning environment...I have to turn in that 500 bucks to make sure I dont lose my spot...

Now I think, why would I go to NSU where I am forced to attend, I have to wear scrubs (not so bad) and must rotate through a known unfriendly DO state.

I am absolutely excited for you -- it's great to know your first choice.

What I'm not understanding is why you say Florida is DO-unfriendly when there are two DO schools here (and another one possibly on the way as part of Barry University), so plenty of graduates are permeating into Florida.

Furthermore, I've seen DO's everywhere I've volunteered and shadowed. None of them have complained... not even the NSU students.

The scrubs, attendance, and cost of living part I get and I totally agree.

Ask around about residency slots in florida and you will get some interesting responses. Look at it this way, the two DO schools in Florida are very primary care oriented (and I mean very, yeah I know all DO schools claim to be but these two really are) so take NSU for example, you will build most of your contacts during 3rd and 4th year and when they focus your schedule on primary care and leave you little time for electives then....well you get the picture (on the other hand DMU leaves 4th year wide open giving more electives than any other school I interviewed at). On top of that look at all the MD schools in Florida (and these are big schools). Your competeing with FSU etc... Just talk to some docs from the area both MD and DO and tell me if you hear otherwise but from the few I've talked with Florida can be very competative for a DO to break out of the primary care stigma.

Well, he beat me to it, but I was about to point out another reason DMU is high on my list of schools......they have the Bone.

The DO who is my assigned "mentor" from that one website is a DMU grad and a radiologist who said he had ZERO problems getting a decent residency spot so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

yes they do. 😉

After visiting DMU, I felt sick to my stomach. I cannot believe they have a curriculum where you do not even see a "real" patient until your third year. And their rotations are so unorganized it’s ridiculous. Why are so many people here ranting and raving about this school. Is it because they give you a free computer and PDA. It is going to take a lot more than that to ever make me step foot back on that campus. Those who have not interviewed here yet or are considering this school please do not be misled by these posts. DMU stinks.

Seriously - you created an account to say this much?? 😕

Troll..........There rotations are setup at some of the most professional and well known hospitals throughout the midwest and are becoming even more prolific throughout the state of Iowa. This one post wonder has obviously never been or was just to ******ed to have done his homework.

What a troll loser.

Someone sounds a little bitter because they just got b!tch slapped by DMU. Good luck with that and sorry for you loss.

I'm looking at the curriculum and you are correct. Electives are available every year but seem to be purely for research, community service, etc.

I didn't know this: In the fourth year you do 3 months of Rural (Ambulatory) Medicine... medicine is medicine regardless of where you practice BUT I do think three months is a bit excessive.

Electives in 4th year are Addiction Medicine, General Psychiatry, EM, Geriatrics, FM, and a whole lot of OMM. Curious.

I would like to point out that their match-list included 1 or 2 matches in neurosurgery, ortho surgery, Diagnostic Radiology over the past 3 years. However, an overwhelming number of students do go into EM, FM, IM, or Peds.

Interesting.

This is exactly how I felt when I intereviewed here. This was maybe my second or third interview and I was pretty much decided on attending PCOM. However, after my interview here, I told my family, "If I don't get in here, I am not sure I want to go anywhere else..." I just felt that strongly about it and I know what you mean by the "thunderbolt." For me, DMU just felt like home and still does. With the exception of SOUNDMAN of course, but we ignore him like we do the giant octopus. Good luck to everyone.

You are right, what would the second oldest Osteopathic school know anyway? They have only been around for over 100 years. What a bunch of *****s they are.

yes.....

yes they do. 😉

It'll be a few years.....what's funny is my daughter and I maybe starting school at about the same time....granted, she'll be entering kindergarten and I will be an MS1, but still....

Eh, patients are overrated anyhow.

Look at it this way, the two DO schools in Florida are very primary care oriented (and I mean very, yeah I know all DO schools claim to be but these two really are) ...

Umm, I'm not sure what you're basing this on; since LECOM-B has only been around for 3 years there is no match list to look at yet. I can tell you there are many people here who have no plans to practice primary care.

I decided to add my opinion as well.
First of all I have been at 4 interviews so far:
1.KCUMB
2.DMU
3.PCOM
4.LECOM

DMU was by far was the school I felt the best about. Such a warm friendly environment, many student hang out and rest places, big spacious areas and lecture halls. I saw many spouses coming to school during the lunch time and bringing kids with them. Administration is very professional and well organized. Risa rocks all the adminission offices of the DO schools!
Students are happy to be there and happy to share their experience with you (by the way, I just came back from LECOM-ERie and the student who had lunch with us told us that she was given some text to memorize and pass it to the interviewing students, how about honest opinion at this place?).
Yes, free PDAs and Computers, well not free...you pay for it with your tuition, but none of the other schools I visited offer it to their students. Des moines seemed very big-small city with farmers market and old buildings, no traffic and friendly population.
I also liked KCUMB and PCOM, was turned out (you can read my review from 10/6 interview) by LECOM, but DMU was not just the place I like, it was the place where I felt great!
1. UNECOM
2. DMU
3. KCOM
4. Everywhere else (no ranking)

I just had a couple questions about DMU that I'm hoping maybe somebody could answer.
1. Do they have mandatory attendance?
2. Is there a dress code?
3. Is there a list of hospitals available to do rotations at? I looked on the website but couldn't find anything.
4. Do they stress rural medicine like some other DO schools?

If anyone has any answers, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Oh, can someone forward me the memo about how DMU *rules the medical world*?

I guess someone forgot to send that to me.

Are you sure? I thought we sent it out to everyone. Well, just give me your name and address and I will be sure you get the memo. Hey, while you are at it, give me your parent's address as well, I am sure they want a copy.

Oh...sweet, I just got the memo yesterday and I seriously thought I was one of the last ppl to receive it (snail mail...😡 )...well I guess there are still some ppl out there that didnt get it....

No, didnt get it. I dont think anyone outside of Des Moines got it.

Did you know that every time you lie, baby Jesus gets kicked in the head..or cries, something like that? Lighten up, so DMU isn't the Harvard of Osteopathic schools but, you have to admit, it is better than your school. Why you ask? Because I said so is the reply.

What is this list? This is where you interviewd? Whyd you like UNECOM so much?

For me, UNECOM is tied with DMU at the top of my list. They're both reputedly great at OMM, they have very warm and welcoming students and faculty, and great facilities. DMU has an edge in rotations (I would prefer not to do them in IA), but UNECOM has gorgeous scenery, fresh seafood, and a Peet's.

They are probably tied for me too, right now. Mainly b/c UNE is so much closer to home. If they were the same distance away?? Not sure then.

Thanks for the answers. I saw the match list, and it's impressive. Does anyone know if all the rotations are done in Iowa or can you go out of state for them?

You can definitely do them out of state (Ohio, Michigan, Missouri, etc.).
