I feel like admissions comittees are likely to ask applicants to their school the obvious question Why DMU? I want to go there for a number of reasons, including their emphasis on preventative medicine, great facilities, etc. What are some of the reasons why others applied to DMU or to students who already go there, what do you like and dislike about the school, the professors, etc?

I think the harder question might be why Iowa? I mean I'd go to the school if i got in, but everyone knows that Iowa's not the most exciting place. What are some great things about the state?

My gp attended DMU so that is the reason I applied, he has always talked very highly about the school. Have you shadowed any or know any physicians who either attended med school or did their residency or internship there? That would be a good reason.

I know that IA isn't the most exciting place, but its really not that bad either and is pretty decent for a city that is 400,000+. Most of the time, at least during my first year, I didn't get out much anyway because school atkes up a lot of your time. Plus people in Des Moines are usually nauseatingly nice.

I chose DMU because I enjoyed the atmosphere and the student camraderie, the high-tech facilities, the strong OMM department, strong didactic training, actually having gross lab (believe me, I applied to my state school which only did dissection as an elective!), Dr. Boesler, Dr. Mueller, Dr. Crisp, and many other faculty that I met on interview day. I am going through the process of choosing rotation sites, and they have really made it stress free, well as much as it can be I guess. Plus you guys will get a new building to work with!

Des Moines is a decent size city. I would have been perfectly happy going there, but decided to stay in East Lansing. If you like the city-population 400,000 but very low crime rates, and people are generally very nice...then tell them so.

When they asked me "why Iowa" I said I didn't care if I had to go to medical school on the south pole, just so that I could go to medical school. I seriously said that, and they must have liked my answer, plus they got a laugh out of it 😀

I'm from iowa and went to my undergrad in iowa and am a 2nd year at dmu now. To be honest Iowa isn't "exciting" persay but there is fun stuff to do in your limited free time. There are so newer clubs here now for the younger folks, and the new mall has everything in it. It's got the usual movies and etc. To be honest with you the school knows iowa doesn't have the greatest pull in the fun department, but from what most people say, iowa and des moines in general is a very friendly place to live. It's not an act when you interview here, most people on the campus are genuine in welcoming you and are glad you are here. Everybody is very helpful for the most part, and do a good job in making you feel that you are part of a community here and not trying to cut each other's throats for future rotations/residencies/jobs/etc. Hopefully this helps if you have any questions about iowa just let me know, and I'll give my biased opinion 🙄

They asked me that... and I said I feel like it's a great place to study with very few distractions but I would likely leave Iowa upon completing my time there. I got accepted there so just be honest man. If you like the weather, say you like the weather. If you have family there, say that. If you feel you applied there because you really want to become a D.O. and would move anywhere for that purpose, than state that... you get the point. Trust me, they love genuinity (if that's a real word) so don't b.s. them.

I've heard they have really good restaurants in Des Moines...like the best Indian food you'll ever meet (HAHA - Indians. Meet. Meat. Indians are often vegetarians! It was a pun  i didn't originally mean for that to be a joke. I'm pretty freaking funny)...oh and good coffee shops

Iowa = I.O.W.A.

Idiots, out walking around.

Iowa is one of America's great undiscovered secrets! Where else can you live in a place with a fair cost of living, low/no crime, four seasons, great weather and infrastructure for outdoor activities and be 5 hours from Minneapolis, Saint Louis, Kansas City, and Chicago? Des Moines actually has a lot to offer - many of the amenities of a big city without any of the problems...

That having been said, if you're a "blue state voter" who, when deprived of sushi, tofu, or other things you cannot pronounce, will have a nervous breakdown you'll probably want to look elsewhere.

I'm a blue state voter and Iowa isn't too bad. It was pretty close this year and we only lost by 15,000 votes, which is pretty close.

And yes, Iowa is in tornado alley, but I'm from south west missouri and we laugh at how skittish the iowa weather department is about them. They freak out if anything even looks like something's going to happen.

I am also a sushi eater and we have many vegans and vegetarians at my school who do pretty well. (We are a farm state, which means lots of corn and beans, etc (the fruit here is kind of expensive though); but unfortunately means lots of pork...) There are 2-3 good places for sushi and that's enough for me.

Being a blue state supporter who is currently deprived of sushi and many things other people can't pronounce I will have to second this!!! If nothing else my move to the mid west has only further proved to me that NYC should move to the south so I can have the big city and the heat.

At least I will now make good use of my winter break back at home!

I don't know about reaching St. Louis in 5 hours coming from Des Moines (unless you're a speed demon :meanie: ), but the others...that's about right. 🙂 Also, I think our weather is decent but are winters and summers can be ruthless. It hasn't been too bad these past few years though.

If you dont have an answer to this question beforehand, you will by the time you interview from the time you get there. It doesn't take long to see reasons why DMU. My favorite interview thus far.

Well, this is true. Saint Louis is actually 5 hours from my house, which is an hour east of Des Moines. But, I put it on the market and I have a buyer which means...(drumroll) shorter commute times! I may be joining you good folks in Pleasant Hill sometime soon.

Winter isn't too bad...the really brutal part of winter is pretty short when compared to other top vacation destinations like the northwest territories, Alaska, and Greenland. 🙄

It takes me two and a half ours to get to Kansas City and that's because it's a straight shot and a good highway. (I usually drive around 70-80 though.) My friend that drives to Omaha says it takes around an hour and a half to forty five minutes. St Louis is kindof off course since there really isn't a quality direct route.

Great Weather? What are you talking about! Although I do belive Iowa is a great place and has much more to offer than a corn field. Its not about where you are at, but about whom you are with. So, you can have a fun time there. Especially in Des Moines Market Street? Is that where all the bars are? With the hottest babes ever dancing like there is no tomorrow...

Do they really buy the, "Because I just want to be a DO and will go anywhere" thing? I find that hard to believe.

I would hate answering that question, too, although I have yet to be asked it; I really don't care where I go, as long as I go. (Although the closer to SC the better)
