Why do men go into this specialty, can anyone fill me in?

I've heard that not many do anymore, now that there are plenty of female doctors.

They love babies.

It is a specialty that deals mostly with healthy patients.

I asked an ob/gyn why he chose it and that is exactly what his response was. (That and he wanted something surgical)

Because they're all hot, young, and healthy! 😀

So they can practice their love of women.

....didn't somebody say that somewhere?? 😉

Sorry... this question is just *begging* for mischief...

Why not? That's like asking why do women go into urology.

Urology has a co-ed mixure of patients.

True. I see your point.

But as a female and mother of three children, I was glad to have the choice of whether I wanted a male or female OB/GYN. I have been a pt of both, and I prefer males.

And I have to agree with the above posters that OB/GYN is an excellent choice for combining clinical med with surgery.

Even better, I think the "somebody" you refer to actually said that ob-gyns aspire to "practice their love with women." 🙄

Just curious....why do you prefer males? I have only been to a male.

ummmmm, because they enjoy it and feel that they fit well in that specialty. Duh 🙄

I've been told by both male and female OBs that they love their field because it's the one specialty that still allows you to see pts from all other specialties. They say there is female anatomy, male anatomy and pregnant female anatomy. As a specialist of the latter, you get called in by virtually all other specialists for consults...cardiology, neurology, rheum, derm....they all turn to you when they have a pregnant woman as a patient.

that's funny... but no, no pun intended

I think that men have a disadvantage in this field now. Most women I've talked to said they would much rather see a female OB/Gyn. There are a lot more women joining the medical ranks now compared to 30 yrs ago, and a good chunk of these women go into OB/Gyn. Patients have more of a choice now to see either a man or a woman doc.

Very true! But based on the stories my sister has shared with me (she's a practicing OB/GYN in Houston), I have decided that that specialty is not for me (a man).

I've heard of quite a few instances of men in other specialties converting to OB/Gyn - said they were sick of trying to fight death, the greater reward comes with helping life.

Vagina = liver = diaphragm = retina = foot - in the doctor patient setting, they're all just organs/organ systems... People choose what interests them.

Pretty much. It only seems strange for a man to go into ob/gyn if you're thinking he's trying to see some nice poon. Which he's not gonna get.

Most ob/gyn patients are younger, healthier, and looking forward to the outcome. They might be coming into the hospital yelling, screaming and swearing (and boy, do they ever), but they leave a whole lot happier. And when it comes to gyn work like infections/STDs, just don't think it's a whole lot different than someone who's doing wound care on a pressure ulcer or something or an infection in your foot.

It's the male OB/GYN who works at the free clinic on my campus that makes me wonder, because the general population is 18-22 year-old attractive women.....

You clearly have not spent time in a gyn clinic yet

by "hot" they meant burning with yeast infections. bleck.

How 'bout that malpractice insurance ehh?

I'd go into OB/gyn because I love punishing 12 year old girls with 12+ hours of labor because, regardless of what their hormones tell them, they don't have birthing hips yet.

Because it pays as much as surgery but you have a wider variety of cases.

I've heard this, too. OB/Gyns I've talked to say they prefer being on the life incoming end over the life outgoing end.

Some women feel more comfortable with female OB/Gyns, b/c they share the same body parts and have the potential to have the same problems.

Other women prefer men OB/Gyns, b/c they feel that men are not as familiar with the woman's body and are thus more cautious and tender than women OB/Gyns.

Just what I've heard!

grow up 🙄

I remember reading something that addressed this issue in the New York Times lately, but I don't remember where. It was about doctors who have been sick themselves. At least I think it was the Times. Anyway, the article mentioned that some women prefer men OB/GYNs because the women are more likely to say something like, "oh yeah I had that before," and think to themselves it's no big deal, whereas men don't have any experience in it themselves so they just take the womens' word for what they feel. This was written by a doctor (not OB/GYN) who said that one time she commiserated (sp) with a patient about his illness, and the patient didn't seem to like that, and she said it seems that the doctor's role isn't to commiserate but rather to be compassionate and treat.

Personally I am very glad to have a female doctor (she's actually FP, not OB/GYN, which I think is great because she treats both my husband and me and will also be our OB and treat our kids). I'm pretty sure I wouldn't feel comfortable with a male doctor, but I know other people (like some posters above) who say they prefer male gyns.

In the Allo forum there was a thread about men having trouble during their OB/GYN rotations. It was actually under the heading of a complaint about PA students, but the general consensus among the male students seemed to be that this is the most difficult rotation for males because the female doctors don't take the male students as seriously, since these days mostly women enter the field, and because the patients would often request that the male students not be in the room for exams or procedures.

I LOVE my male gyno...he has a female Physician assistant that I have to see sometimes if my gyno is out delivering babies...she makes me nervous because she isn't gentle, but my male gyno is great...he talks to me the whole time and makes me feel much more comfortable...the PA basically just says "spread 'em"

I'm a woman, and I actually prefer male physicians... I went to a male pediatrician, and so now it just feels more natural...

Do OB/GYN docs do transgender surgeries?

You're right. Why do women go into urology, when they clearly don't have anatomy that would relate to urology.

Are you serious?

I'm sure you could find a few in Tijuana that would be more than happy to do that for you.

I would imagine that a general surgeon would handle cases like these.

Edit: Oops never mind. Just didn't read post carefully enough.

A friend of mine was about to see an intern gynecologist as the newly minted doc's first exam. The intern was heard in the hallway saying to his attending, "I don't know what to do! I've never done this before!" He then walked into the patient exam room and calmly said, "Hi, I'll be performing your physical today." Needless to say, friend was even more nervous.

I've been to both, I liked the ones who were the best doctors, not one sex over another. Trust me, there are some scary woman gynos too... :scared:

Way to bump up a year-old thread!

My (male) cousin just matched in OB/GYN. When I asked him why he wanted to go into it, he said that there was a moment in his OB rotation after the child was born, you're either drawn to the mother or the child...

That was it for him.

Plus, I think he wanted the surgical aspect.

I was told by a doctor recently that there is a gender bias in hiring gynos. Anybody have stats to back this up?

It sounds to me like many men who want to go into the field are choosing to specialize in OB (if possible), and leaving the GYN to female gynos and PAs.

I aksed my ob/gyn and he said the same..surgical, good patients. He also said that it had good hours for a family man. He works in a large group and doesn't take call often.

well, why do women go into it? i feel sexually discriminated upon. okay, not really.

back to the subject, maybe it's a good way to meet chicks.
