Why do people call organic chemistry called orgo? I know I've even heard it on TV citcoms, but that doesn't make it okay. I also know that chemists like to take short cuts wherever possible, but why say orgo? True chemists wouldn't call it that. :barf:Does it really save time? Where does that "o" come from, it doesn't make sense. Maybe we should say I'm going to pharmo, instead of pharmacy school. Or maybe I'm just drunk posting, who knows.

I have heard it been called "O-Chem," however, orgo is still a short cut...

i've heard orgo and ochem, but i go with ochem just cause it sounds better.

As I person who was a TA and a tutor for organic for a long time - I can definately feel where you are coming from.🙂🙂 I've noticed that most people who call it orgo are either pre-meds or non-science majors. I really don't know anyone in my major/among my friends who would say orgo. Most people say - oh, I finished my first semester organic or I took organic 1 with Dr. Blah Blah. With that being said I don't see much harm in calling organic orgo - it just makes me laugh when I see someone is parading around town and advertising that they are taking "orgo".🙂🙂🙂

I use O-chem, G-chem, and P-chem. But it's still a two syllable short cut to two 3-syllable words. I think you're probably right about the drunk posting suggestion, but that's just me.

What about I-chem? Inorgo?

What about I-chem? Inorgo?

Hahahahaha. Inorgo=that's hilarious. You gotta realize though - most people who call organic orgo - never get to the level of inorgo.

God, I wish I was drunk posting too - hello microbiology and pchem cum finals nex week.:scared::scared::scared:

What about I-chem? Inorgo?

u mean chem 1, as for orgo would u rather orga? orgo sounds better and its perfectly fine. ppl find shortcuts, as a matter a fact shortcuts are almost everywhere PCAT is one lol, yw, thx.

Ochem at least makes sense as some type of abbreviation.

The word 'Orgo' makes absolutely no sense to me and is probably something made up by the pre-meds.

What about I-chem? Inorgo?

A lot of people don't realize that inorganic chemistry isn't the same thing as general chemistry at a lot of schools. Often, it is what they call an upper level course in organometallic chemistry.

i tend to write "orgo" but i say "ochem"

🙄

He meant upper division inorganic chemistry you take after you complete a year of pchem:meanie::meanie::meanie:

Again, most people who call it orgo - never get to the level of inorgo.:meanie::meanie::meanie:

We already know you are a fan of shortcuts 🙂:meanie:

Everyone here forgot my all time favorite:
Anal-Chem

You guys should get used to abbreviations now. Once you start your first semester, you'll be hit with a bunch of them. Also in your future practice, everything is abbreviated.😎

I meant to call it "Orgo" the whole time I took it because I thought it woulda been cute, but the class itself was so hard (and not cute at all). So I forgot to do that, lol and ending up calling it "Organic" the whole time. I still refer to it affectionately as "Organic". Haven't seen it yet in Pharmacy School so I'm kinda mad (and HAPPY at the same time).

The problem is that the abbreviation seems to make no sense. Abbreviations typically do.

Well, I'm going to defend the pre-meds. I have never heard one say orgo! Someone mentioned in thread awhile back that it depends on the school you go to. My school uses o.chem, others use orgo. I do agree that orgo doesn't make sense though.

The students at my school called it orgo, so that's what I called it. Never really thought about how it didn't make much sense to do so. (Qualifier: I don't know what abbreviation the hardcore chemistry students used. But I definitely heard physical chemistry called p-chem.)

hard core chem students just use ochem or organic for organic chemistry and pchem of course 🙂🙂🙂

I first heard "orgo" on this board. I laughed my ass off because it sounds like....another word....ahem...😎

In my region, the shortened version of organic chemistry was "organic"

Other shortened course names of note at my schools:

Biochemistry = biochem
Physical chemistry = p chem
Analytical chemistry = quantitative (the course was called "quantitative analysis" at my school)
General chemistry = 109 (course number) or gen chem

etc.

In our school analytical chemistry was also called quantiutative analysis or quant.🙂

Many others called it "evil"😀

Hey, that's one of the fav classes in our chem department. A super hot young analytical chemist is teaching it - it's hard to hate the subject when you have someone so cool and attractive as your teacher. Besides, that along with pchem 👍 was one of my fav classes of all times. 🙂🙂🙂

Yes, and p-chem makes sense. That is what my p-chem professor called it (and he is pretty hardcore). Orgo just sounds ******ed. I like organic for short. Many of the students that I work with that are taking organic at UIC call it orgo too, I hate them....jk. O-chem seems acceptable. And yes anal-chem was anal, but fun, unlike other anal things :scared:.

Well we didn't have any hot chicks in the chemistry department! The only ones that were even close by were in the biology department. At least that kept me from getting too distracted from my work!

Hahaha, clearly you went to the wrong school - we have them all at our chemistry department, hot chicks, hot chicks that look like barbies, hot chicks that dress like hookers and then there are the rest of us - sleep deprived, crazy-haired, coffee stained clothes-kinda nerds. 🙂

Well maybe a couple of them would have looked okay after a couple of beers in a dark room while wearing glasses (because I don't wear any).
