I dont know, it seems like everyone is bantering about how much "BPM" is missing by studying so much. Well, I dont really care much about him, but what's the big deal with studying? And along the same lines, some people enjoy the callenge and the rewarding feeling associated with the work.
Take me (of course the epitomization of my example), here's my day to day schedule.
wake up at 8, leave for class.
Study from 8 to 3.
Get home at 4.
Talk to GF/Read/Wax Car/play instrument until 5-6.
Sleep until 8.
Exercise until 9:30.
Eat Dinner till 10:00 (maybe other things until 10)
Then Study untill 2-4.
An I can honestly say I'm perfectly content. I've got my goals and enjoy working towards them - hell, I even like my classes - more than anything I can wholeheartedly say I wouldnt have it any other way - I dont party, dont drink, dont do many campus activities. But, despite my "geeky" nature I'm having a blast.
So, stop talking about how much he's missing out on life - what each person values is really subjective - you might value time with your family. I personally value time making progress more.
That's my take on all this.
