Why do residents get paid so little?

Didn't read every post, but about 50k is the standard number, right?

when I was looking (in 2009), starting interns were usually around $45K, but not all salaries are equal. You might be paying large portions of your monthly insurance premiums or none of them. You also might get a generous education fund or you might get nothing.

In most regions interns start in the high 40s. Within a year or two you will be over 50.
