Why do RNs hate on DOs?

Hate on DO's??? I don't see that anywhere except on SDN. TBH, most patients love just being rubbed the right way, so they appreciate OMM.

I've asked every single DO I've come across if they do OMM/OMT, and the answer has always been no, which is unfortunate. Why go through the training if you don't practice it in the real world? I wonder if it's because the employer is an MD/DO mixed practice and disallows OMM/OMT as SOP or something.

Most DO's realize they don't want to utilize a therapy that has pretty weak evidence behind its efficacy. This is essentially confirmed in the first two years of medical school and from there its just easy to stay away from it.

I think in the outpatient setting, some primary care DO's use because they can bill for it however the rules are state dependent I think. I haven't actually heard of a hospital stating you couldn't use it.

99% of us came to medical school to be physicians who practice medicine so this shouldn't be shocking.

like said above I am a DO because that’s the medical school I got into. you learn a lot of stuff in medical school you will never use again. It’s not just OMM.

It depends, I had some friends who declared nursing during undergrad who were destroying the prereqs and honestly brilliant students and could have easily been accepted into medical school. Some were even tutoring bio and chem to kids who are currently in medical school. I asked them why not pursue medicine, they said they didn't want to go through all the schooling. It honestly depends ...

Yeah sure. Nursing students tutoring med students are like unicorns. You hear about it on the internet but they don’t exsist. If I had a dollar for every time a nurse or nursing student said “the world needs smart nurses too” I’d be able to pay my loans off. And yours. And everyone here probably.

Don't forget Gaylord Fokker. He chose to become an RN over medical school even though he aced the MCAT.

Funnily enough I have known 2 PAs who had 30+ MCATs who decided medical school wasn’t for them. I have never met a nurse with that profile tho. This joke is showing your age, I think most of SDN hasn’t seen meet the parents.

When I was shadowing docs for my med app I asked them why they chose med school over PA etc., and most just said it comes down to lifestyle choices, like how much time do you want to dedicate for what level of responsibility/involvement

Very unlikely that it's disallowed.

For me personally, it's a matter of comfort (or discomfort) with my ability to effectively treat certain body regions. I'd rather not be advertised as someone that can do OMT but pull it out of my toolbox at my leisure for select patients and complaints. I don't like being booked for exclusive OMT visits, as then it's expected that I treat potentially any body region.

For those who don't do it at all, it makes sense. Questionable efficacy combined with needing to do it fairly regularly to keep your skills up means it is just easy to take a backseat to everything else. Primary care is difficult, largely because of the breadth required. I need to be able to do a fairly long list of office procedures, but I don't need to do OMT.

I popped some lady’s back on my surgery rotation and she thought itwas magic.Haven’t used omm since then (over a year)but I could see how patients get their rox off on this stuff

We don't. I'm an RN in a DO school and have never heard anti-DO sentiment from others nurses. All we want is a competent physician at the bedside.

I have never seen a nurse hate on a DO. However this could be because the EM Directors of both hospitals I work in are DOs and the CEO of the group is a DO.

Never experienced it. In my experience the only people that hate on DOs are those who are big on prestige and DOs that have a deep sense of self-loathing

My dream is to have a room full of DOs; so I want to be the DO orthopedic surgeon, God Willing. I am gonna call a DO anesthesiologist. The residents assisting will also be DO. Condition is after the surgery, everyone has to give each other OMM, LOL!

I hope that people are not still stuck in their pre med mindset... noone hates anyone... Really you do 4 years of med school then you go into these specialties where no one cares about the initials on the coat... people are not really wearing a coat either with the COVID stuff going around.

I dont unless I look at back at it, I know i did pretty well... but i dont remember how to look it up- i guess it involves some login to aamc or something..its gonna be a hassel to look it up.
Oh right now all the organic chemistry, physics that I am thinking was likely in my MCAT- I am pretty sure I would do so bad that i will be embarrassed to talk about it.

The ones who hate DOs (MDs as well) are those who enrolled in NP programs. Iam pretty sure they teach about doctors' incompetence in there lol.
