why do so many mayo students stay for residency?

i know that almost every school has a lot of its own students go on to residency there, but at mayo it's 40% or more! is there some sort of incentive they give for staying? also, i noticed that those who go elsewhere don't exactly get into the best programs, with some exceptions of course. i'm wondering if you "cross" them by not ranking them high or at all, they may not sell you as well to other programs?
