Hi all

I have a question that im sure has come up somewhere before somewhere. Im a last year MSc student in and my PI is a PhD who went into Breast Cancer research because he watched his mother die from it (sadly enough)
So im sure that certain people choose their professions due to some personal experiances which they have gone through. I was wondering what the general conceses was in the field of psychiatry. I have herd one story about a psychiatrist from out west who went into psych because she herself has been effected by schizophrenia in the past.
any thoughts

Nice question--I didn't want to go into psych at first, b/c I thought it was too amorphous, that I wouldn't ever do anything "concrete" for people. But I had a lot of people who saw that I was good with people and liked listening, and they gradually convinced me that in reality, we do A LOT. But back to your initial question--I have a recovering alcoholic father and a wife who suffered greatly from clinical depression. I KNOW that people can get better, and I like seeing hope get a foothold in their lives.
