Why does the NRMP charge for a rank list that has more than 20 programs on it? If you interviewed at that many programs, why should you have to pay $30 for each one above 20? It's not like by applying to programs, where too many applicants will flood the schools with applications. Can the holy algorithm not handle the extra spots?

Seriously, any idea? And has it always been this way?

With the fees associated with adding programs to ERAS, the $70 USMLE transcript transmission fee, the $1200 for Step 2 CS, do you really not know? It's a money grab by all parties (NBME, AAMC, NRMP). There's no extra work that NRMP goes through to put the extra programs through the match.

...because they can?

Presumably, to encourage people not to rank more than 20 programs. Statistically it probably doesn't help to rank more than 20.

However, I agree that it really shouldn't matter. It's no more "work" for anyone at the NRMP, and it doesn't make the match any more complicated.

Because NRMP is a business. Like any business, they try to get money out of their customers any way they can.

Dear Jeebus, I hope this isn't the case for couples. If it is, our ROL will cost us another $4800. After spending $7k on ERAS and another ~$25k on interviews, it would be nice to catch a break here.

(Carib grads: him - EM and Gen Surg, her - anesthesia and prelim IM)

If you submit with >20 and pay the fee, does it cost money to recertify your list with the same amount of ranks? I'm guessing no, but don't want to make a costly mistake.

There's a higher total for couples.

And for couples, it's "30 unique ranks". So, if you have 30 programs and your partner has 30 programs, then you should be able to create a ranklist of all possible combinations (960 ranks long!) without paying any extra fees.

I don't know what happens with prelim ranks.

Came back here to report on my conversation with the NRMP. They essentially confirm what above post says: you pay for a program, no matter how many times you list it (in the couples match)

This is great news..... I thought I was going to have to start knocking off liquor stores.

The same reason a male dog licks himself in his happy place: because he can.

I realize no one has answered this question yet. Nope, once you pay your fee for > 20, you can rearrange and re-certify for free thereafter.
