(I know, it must be my day for asking random questions)
Why do some dental schools want you to send a photo of yourself?
I did a search of the forums on this... didn't come up with much. One post mentioned that it helps them remember who you are, like when you have been interviewed and such.

any other speculation? If it's just to be remembered, then why would they want the photo before you're even given an interview?

Well I give the face an 8
the body a 7
overall sex appeal 5

Thats why they want the photos!

I've heard that when they are reviewing your application they're looking at your pic at the same time. I guess they like to put a face to whatever you write in your SOP.

My guess is that they used to have applicants bring pictures to the interview and after so many of them forgot to do so they decided to require them up front.

hmm i heard it's because people that are socially inept use to get someone to go to interviews for them... and would get into that school and then no one would recognize that person (this was the story one of the schools that i interviewed at told us... i don't remember what school anymore...)

They interview a lot of people, so the photo makes it easier to put a face with the name.

damn thats a really good idea!!!

I don't know why they do it, but whoever said racial profiling might not be that far off.

There's no need to put a face to the application when selecting who to interview. Why does it matter what you look like when you're trying to pick out the interview candidates based on what's on paper (DAT/GPA/LOR/essay/experience, etc.)?

It is nice to be able to put a face to the name after the interview to make the admissions decision, I agree. However, you, the candidate don't have to supply the picture to the school for them to be able to do this. With digital cameras these days, this isn't hard at all. At 2 of my orthodontic interviews last year, they took our pictures while we were at the interview so they could put them into Power Point later that day when the committee met to mull over who to rank and who to drop. Ironically, however, both of these programs also required you to send your picture before hand as well.

Sorry, I'm just complaining b/c I too have to get my picture taken right now, and it's just another annoyance to deal with as I try to get my applications done.

But imagine a adcom commitee having to decided on who take take into there school. I don't mean to offend anbody or any particular race.
Can you imagine how many patels there would be applying to dental or med school or Ngyuien (sorry I can't spell) for that matter. Those last names are very common. I can only imagine that having a picture makes it somewhat easier to tell people with last names apart.

Just my 2cents. I am sure I am gonna get called for racial bashing, but I think i bring up a valid point.

They require photos for CIA investigation purposes, to weed out terrorists 😀

I don't mind if they have my picture, because I have very nice teeth.

Besides, I already gave it my best. I have no regrets at all.

I think it is to make sure it is really you that is coming to the interview.

I did.

Its because they want to see if your teeth are ugly or not.

If your teeth are ugly, you're not gonna get in...
If your teeth are pretty, you're gonna get in...

Its as simple as that

So what do you do?

One word. PHOTOSHOP
(On an apple computer of course)

2 photos? my letter said to bring A 2x2 photo (not 2). i wonder why the difference?? btw, my friend and i are interviewing at case the same day as you, DDS2BE... i guess i'll see you there!

I know what you mean by the people with the same name. I went to an interview and found out there is another applicant that has the same identical name as I do. She even went the same school as I do 😱

Easy solution for those with imperfect teeth: just don't grin in your pic!

Finally, I'll get to see live SDNers 🙂 Speaking of photos, I'll bring 2 just in case.

the only SLIGHTLY logical thing i see is that they need it for the incoming class composite for all the 1st yr students...but they can always get if from the accepted students.

other than that, i don't see how it is meant to aid the application process!
what do u all think?

In the future, do a quick search to find some quick answers. For example, this same questions was discussed extensively earlier this month in this thread:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=141664

22 responses await you there. 😀

I"m merging this thread with that one for housekeeping purposes.

yes, it is to recognize a face with the interviewee, but know at some schools ie UOP, the picture you hand them ultimately becomes the picture they will use to put up the class of the incomming year. They have a wall of their students, and if you are selected by their adcom, than your picutre goes on that wall. and you will be presented to the school as the incomming class, and so on. i hope this answer is reasonable, and makes sence to you all.

darn...should have sent in a nicer photo of myself🙁
