Why Do You *REALLY* Want To Become A Doctor?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No BS answers. Why do you really want to be a doctor?

Me:

Thought it was a cool job

Enjoy learning and physiology/body is very interesting to me

Surgery seems cool too yo

Helping people at the end of the day makes your job better. If you've been in businesses that screw people over then you can understand this statement much more.

Oh thank god. It's been almost a week since I saw this thread last.

Stable job, good income, mobility.
Lots of people go "oh well THISSS makes tons more money" but there's something to be said for knowing that you're going to be guaranteed a 6 figure job for the rest of your life if you work hard.

Helping others brings you closer to God.

i dont know what else id do. not because im one of those people who are incredibly passionate about medicine, but because i dont know anything about the world and how it works. i havent been exposed to much of anything else. its always been looking down a pipe for me. its like i have blinders on me. or im one of those Clydesdale horses just walking through the streets i used to roam. dont get me wrong i do have a desire to go into medicine. lets tell the truth, im crying a little bit as i write this because i am happy i get to go into this field but also tears of sadness stream down my face as i realize i will have to put my life on hold in order to receive the training and education demanded of me. so i usually have to take with me the memories to be my sunshine after the rain. thats what usually gets me through the day. im about to lose my mind. i want to meet new people and i want to meet new people in this field.

Eortic interest in Surgery. 😎

srsly.

Being able to bring people back to life when they're at the brink of death.
let see if I still have the same mentality 8 years from now. 🙄

I had nothing better to do with 7 years of my life...actually said that at interviews 🙂 Honestly wins!

Well i'm debating between optometry school and med school, but id like to do both of these for pretty much the same reasons. the money is always a good thing, and i think that something i really want is stability, and i feel like careers in medicine give that. I also enjoy helping people, and this seems like the perfect field for that ^_^

Excellent money, good job security, high mobility, being in high demand, plus knowing at the end of the day you did something worthwhile.

Telling people that I save lives for a living, making bank, being Dr. Geneticist, M.D., etc...

I could give you some BS about wanting to help people but REALLY?

hot girlz and $$$

Dispite what everyone says number one for me is the respect they get thoughout the community and especially the hospital! The secure income and one of the highest feelings of feeling important. You will always be needed and cant be "replaced" (not all specialties at least). Going home knowing that you made a huge difference, compared to another job like flipping burgers, sales, ect. The only really true downside is the commitment but that dont bother me. Hell you are basically amoung the top class in the U.S.

It's a good challenge...plus, I can put off my REAL career choice for a couple more years (all while having a secure income).

After seeing a semi-old guy get his rib cage cracked open and part of his lung removed last Summer.... Everything else just sounds lame.

What has been seen... 🙁

Get rich or die tryin'

job stability, interest in field will probably be my 2 cents, but think about it, what else can a degree in science do these days?

(almost intentionally provoking argument...lol...😛)

In German class of my senior high school career we watched a Holocaust movie every morning that really shook me. Then one day a Darfur slideshow came on our "morning news" and I overheard a popular girl say how disgusting the children with the huge stomachs were.

Since then I went into Nursing, found Nursing to be so terribly frustrating, and then switched to premed. And here I am. 🙂

nearly 30 posts and I am glad I haven't seen the cliched "I want to help people"

Steady life
money
availability no matter what
comfortable environment and helping others
respected or at least i think
always learning/new technology

Nice avatar. "I'm telling you when you hear the track, you're gonna want more cowbell. I have a fever.......... and the only prescription is more cowbell"

You don't need to spend 24 hrs/day on SDN to know that this thread pops up every week. A simple search that takes all of 30 seconds (or less) could've easily shown you this.

Stable Job.
Good money.
Interesting work.
The ability to do some good.

Hot murses. Always wanted to be a sugar mama.

I would NEVER use someone for sex! Shame on you!

Hot murses. Always wanted to be a sugar mama.

wait... are you going in it for man bags? well i do have one, and i carry two things in it, oh and me like sugar mamas.

there should be a thread call "bad reasons why you wanna be MD/DO" lol

A job that balances being intellectual, and mentally stimulating. With actually doing something with your hands, and not just sitting behind a desk all day. The feeling that I'll actually be worth something, not feeling like a total failure, doing a job I feel has some purpose. Exciting. I can't think of any other thing I could imagen doing with my life and being content.

Wow, over 40 posts and not one "chicks, money, power, and chicks" response.
I guess someone has to...800th post

I want to be able to walk out of the OR after just saving a life and have people say "THAT right there is a BAMF." But I also really want to "help" those in need.

I think there is a little ego in it for everyone going for an M.D

I don't have the grades to get into nurse practitioner or chiropractor school so i have to settle for medicine
