Why does the LoR coversheet say 'please don't make it specialty-specific'?

I don't get it. This is the second in the list of instructions in the coversheet to request letters. As I am applying only to Path programs, wouldn't it make sense to get letters that talk about my interest in Path? I wonder if this is some new rule or letter writers just don't have to pay attention to it if the candidate is only applying for one specialty.

any thoughts?

Do you have the link to the .pdf (or whatever the format is) on the ERAS website? I don't remember seeing that last year...

and i just checked the US graduate LoR request and this point is not included...hmmmm

2 out of 3 of my writers have already sent in theirs (without mentioning the specialty, they said....i waived my right to see them)
the third called me to confirm because she thought it would be more convincing to talk about my interest in Path and hence the residency.

That is distinctly odd! I cannot think of why they would do that, except for those who are applying to more than one specialty. I think I used the US grad form last year so I can't tell you if it was there on the IMG form.

As you say, the whole point of a LOR from a pathologist is that it is specialty-specific.

It's nice that your third letter-writer called to confirm the point. I would tend to agree with her, it would be a lot more convincing to write about your interest in Path especially if they know you well.

I can understand your concern - there is the small risk of "not following instructions", so to speak, but I highly doubt that the people who scan LORs for ERAS would bother reading through each and every one of the letters to make sure they weren't targeted towards a particular specialty. They have more pressing matters to deal with when the season is in swing.

Your personal statement is going to be all "GO PATH!!" anyway.

Maybe you could pretend you "didn't see"? 😉

Yeah I never heard of that either. My letter writers all distinctly knew that I was going into pathology and they talked about my interest in it and aptitude for it.

That's exactly what I'm going to do 🙂

Yeah, I thought this was strange, too. All of my letters are from Pathologists, and I'm pretty confident they mentioned the fact that I am looking for a Pathology residency. I bet this is probably (as deschutes pointed out) for those poor souls applying to more than one specialty.
