Why does UoP prefer west coasties?

I'd say the culture shock of moving out west and the continuously chilly weather of the bay area would be enough to make sure people really know what they are getting into, on top of dental school work.

Well, on the other hand I sort of feel like I have to convince East Coast schools that I would be willing to make the move. Maybe UoP just wants to know that those they accept will come and that might include people who live within 1000 miles.

personal opinion, but I think it is because they want people who are more likely to stay close to UOP and on the west coast. UOP gets a huge amount of money from alumni donations, and alumni who feel more closely tied to the school cause they come back to it for weekend CE courses and stuff are more willing to give.

Also feel the same way about east coast schools. They seem to look more favorably on east coasters.

I don't know why you say that because I know a some who went through there and weren't from the west coast. Maybe they're like those people below... 😀

wow, you know someone 🙄

look at predents and where all the interviewees are from. no one listed east of arizona.

i'm not complaining...i know my DATs wouldn't score me an interview there, just would be a lil ticked if UoP was my top choice and they wouldn't give me an interview partly b/c i'm from Florida, ya know?

jb!

Actually UoP is a WICHE participant, so they get subsidies from western states when they accept a WICHE student

do you have a source? it's not listed on their website

Predents only list a 1/3 or 1/4 of the 2006 students. Even on there...the guy 'jg289' is from pennsylvania...

I don't think subsidity plays any major part in it...it's probably more due to competition pool. If subsidy is an issue where they need money, then they would have accept more out-of-states to collect more money than in-state students where they collect less $. It's the only 3 year school in the nation...so you are competing against a pool of sharks. I'm a CA resident but unlikely I'll get in there anyway so no big deal.

Dont think about it like that...WICHE doesn't subsidize the school's cost, they subsidize the student's cost

The goal is usually to bring the cost for a WICHE student from out of state to in state prices. School still gets the full out of state price, student hopefully gets in state prices or close to it after the funding.

The funding is getting dry from what I hear also...I'm not counting on getting any funding. Plus, the individuals they award it too are extremely odd. I've heard it's academically based, but the two I met were not steller. Below average GPA and DAT scores. Really not sure what goes on there.

True, but I thought the point of WICHE was for a student to receive both comparable in-state tuition as well as in-state consideration for acceptance. I mean, look at Colorado. They only interview in-staters or possible WICHE candidates. I don't know how well that translates to a private school, but I just thought I would mention it.

Its the same reason NJ likes east coast kids, they are more likely to go to a school that is close to home.

When I called NJ, the lady said I was qualified for an invite, but they didn't think I would go there because I live out west.

NJ is a state school. UoP is not. there is no correlation.

Who said anything about state vs private. They are worried only about filling their class.

BJ needs to realize that realtive location to home is a huge factor in deciding which kids to take.

Yeah, state vs. private is a huge difference, private schools don't get state funding in return for reserving spots for in-state students. Obviously, state schools do

I think you should give up the "pre-ninja" user title and opt for "Not Armored Tooth." That would make me smile. Oh, there it goes. 🙂

Well that is the only thing I could come up with, NJ said they didn't think I would go there because of the huge move across country.

You guys honestly don't think this thought has any validity with UoP?

I think it might. State or Not.

We're all grown ups at this stage. Nobody is worried about us becoming homesick if we move across the country. That can't be the reason for NJ denying you.

I wasn't denied, I promise that is the what I got from the secretary.

I am telling you, I think this idea isn't that far out.

I think what they may assume is that if an applicant is competitive enough to go to UoP, they'll get into a school closer to them, and go there.

Personally I think if that's the truth its stupid, but it makes some sense I guess, people do like to stay near home.

The director of WICHE in Hawaii came to talk to our predent club. He gave us a sheet with all the schools, how much they pay, etc. The major motivation for schools to accept WICHE students is the fact that they make more money on them. WICHE makes it so that with the scholarship, the tuition adds up to be more that 100% for the schools. It didn't have that break down for UoP, but for example UCLA 2005 tuition was $46,802 (non-res). The amount of money received by the school for each WICHE student was $55,979 (119.61%).

But I bet it's mainly just that UoP gets a ton of applicants from the west, and thats the main reason they have so many west coasters.

I love it how every time you talk to the WICHE people they tell you something new. Hopefully your hawaii WICHE folks are more consistant because here in AZ they're all over the place.

Also, I was under the impression that hawaii was overloaded with dentists. This true? If so, why do they still sponsor WICHE people?

AZ represent, Ducky.

Curious as to why UoP prefers west coasties? Do they receive ANY state funding whatsoever? Wish they would give some ppl from the east coast a shot, ya know....

jb!

Simple. Because HELLA MORE west coasters apply to UoP than east coasters. Duh!

That's a good question, but I'm definitely not going to ask them!😀

Well, we are overloaded on Oahu, but the outer islands are lacking dentists, especially specialists. And it's pretty sweet, since only 2-3 people from Hawaii go to dental school each year, we are pretty much guaranteed the scholarship if we apply.

Yay WICHE!😛
