Why Don't More Pychiatrists

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What happened to this guy?

That particular 3D setup wasn't one I built, though I am building a few. I just grabbed that one off of a website from a guy I've met who already built one because it was more convenient.

The ones I'm working on now are a pub (called the "Welcome Wench") from Gygax's old Temple of Elemental Evil, and an abandoned keep (a mini-castle), the first real "dungeon" the players enter.

It's not tough, but it's time consuming. Guys have made molds, all you do is poor plaster into them, wait for them to dry and I can then airbrush them. Either that or there are paper 3D terrains available.

I mentioned before I like to build models and this is pretty much along the same lines. Before I got into the gaming, I was focusing on sci-fi and WWII models.

And since the thread is already partly derailed, I also like to spend a lot of my free time investing in stocks, and going out to high end restaurants. I was thinking out getting a boat and learning to sail but there aren't any oceans in Ohio.

(IF you look carefully and if the thread's still available, I wrote years ago to put your money into gold in the SDN investing forum and people were laughing at me, not apparently understanding the concept of a country's currency losing value. Look who's laughing now. If only I had an attending salary to put into the gold back then. Oh, and by the way, I'm 50-50 on gold now. I wouldn't recommend it. I can see the price plummet with rising inflation).

If you *really* want some leverage, look into trading options, but as you've probably heard, it's also a much quicker way to lose your money. But that's only if you're using them to speculate.

You could also use them to generate a bit of income (ie: writing covered calls or naked puts) - which I'm actually a big fan of.

Options are amazing if you learn how to use them safely, for example:

Writing DEC 390.00 AAPL calls (uncovered aka "naked") wouldn't be a very smart thing to do. On the other hand, if you own some AAPL and sold ("wrote") calls against them (aka covered calls), there's no risk involved there and at the very least you're generating some income, effectively lowering your initial purchase price.

Whoa.... doctors have hobbies???? 😉

Well I guess I remember some thread on the anesthesia forum where they were comparing gun / assault rifle collections. Maybe being paranoid about cRNA's spills over into their personal life ...

Why don't we have a gun thread?

I think we do...now. This is mine.

I think this is also a good time to point out to our now banned troll (if he's still reading) that everyone has different hobbies. Some people spend their money on guns. Others on their home theater setup. Still others on a Ferrari. I personally plan on spending a hefty bit of change on a home recording studio. 🙂

Excellent point. I'm funding my own writing time and potentially indie movie making career...

Lake Erie's kind of like a Beginner's Ocean...

You can't derail what was never railed in the first place. This is actually one of the more successful troll threads I've seen on SDN.

Mad props to everyone for the way we handled this one. Psych FTW.

Why don't we have a gun thread?

Assuming I have enough money left either at christmas break or the end of first year, I'm planning on gifting myself something to complement the already available glock 19, 4" colt python, ruger 10/22, and s&w .38 airweight.

Currently in the running (picking 1 only sucks 🙁) are an advantage arms .22 conversion for the glock, a beretta 3901 (would really like to pick up skeet), and some kind of savage .17 hmr (but this ones a little less likely a prospect).

Leaning toward the beretta

trading options

If one is very confident a company will surge, then options make sense. It's happened a few times with me. Some examples: when GOOG came out I knew it was going to skyrocket, but at that time I didn't have much money.

As for gold, since 9-11, anyone with a basic understanding of currency would've been able to tell it would've skyrocketed. I don't claim genius over this. A buddy of mine pointed this out to me when I though the post 9-11 issues had taken their toll. With mounting debts, no pull-out with 2 wars in sight (back then), nothing that signified the economy would get better, and government taking no steps to curb in spending, anyone would've been able to tell gold was going up.

As for guns, I keep thinking I'll get one in the next few months, then years go by and I haven't gotten one yet.

They're a lot of fun. Don't blame you for delaying the hassle if you're still in NJ though

Yukon XL. 7.5 mile commute, so gas price has little to do with Cost of Ownership. Trips with friends now much easier - and they pay for gas so I pay nothing for it. Had it 9 days before the stereo/nav and 3rd row seat were stolen at a gated, fenced, guarded parking lot.

Indeed, NJ has draconian gun laws. While it is "may issue", that really just means, "good luck with that, buddy!". They will find every reason under the sun to cause you problems/delay you ability to own/possess/purchase a gun in NJ. As for a CCW...that is next to impossible to attain.

I'm sorry, I look down on people who go into this field with the goal of gaining "status" and money.

First of all, you can make way more money doing other stuff. It's easy to forget that med school costs a quarter million minimum.

More reflective is the need to display status via certain vehicles. By the time most of us get through training, we're less enamored with false idols.

Nowhere to put the child seats.

To continue the theme the ideal car will always allow enought space to do this....a must really...
