Is iron absolutely contraindicated in anemia of chronic disease or do you not give it cause it won't resolve anything? Could someone explain? Thank you in advanced!

When you are in a chronic disease state, levels of Hepcidin will be high. Hepcidin is a key regulator of serum Iron levels. When high, it causes iron to be sequestered into macrophages, so that pathogens cannot access it. So I imagine, any Iron you add will not improve the anemia, because it too will be sequestered into the macrophages. You have to first, resolve the underlying condition, which will lower Hepcidin levels, which then allows the iron to be used in Heme synthesis.
