A good friend will come and bail you out of jail.
A true friend will be sitting in the cell next to you saying "Man we really ****ed up this time."

Friends don't drain you first of all. If you're getting drained those aren't friends. If you're having trouble finding friends don't try so hard, just be you and do what you do and somewhere along the line someone will seem to always pop up around you and that person will probably share interests hobbies with you. It should click naturally, if not, just try reaching out a little and hopefully the person doesn't struggle as much as you seem to with making/handling friends.

I wonder if the OP has read this thread at all since posting it...

Why not try to be less socially awkward instead of dismissing the idea of friends all together? If you truly don't have any real friends, then it leads me to believe that you might the one with the problems. I find it hard to imagine that there are billions of people in the world, but none of them are capable yet of being a true friend. Either you are a rare exception to life or you just need to learn social skills.

OP = type of person I hope med schools screen out (typically post-interview).

No offense, OP.

You don't meet good friends then.. You should be able to not talk to your friend for a month or two and when you finally hang out, it's like you saw each other yesterday.

Dear OP,

Friends are overrated. You are born, you live, you die. During the process of birth to death, you meet people. Some people you meet will be friends for life, a day, a couple of minutes, a couple of years, and so forth. There will be times in your life when you have no friends. Every human goes through this stage, some early in life and som near the time of death. Just by going through your daily acitivites you will interact with people. Interactions with other people creates relationships. All relationships with every person are their individual self.

Translation: don't make it an issue to talk about school. School is only a portion of your life. Talk about the latest news, controversial topics, let the other person talk about themself, etc, etc.

I know it's good to have friends, but as I see it, there are as many drawbacks to it too, as least for me. You lose your comfort and freedom of mind because you have to give certain portion of your spirit and energy to others, whereas if you have no friends, you get to keep that amount of energy and spend it elsewhere or keep it so that you're less tired. Two other benefits I can think of now is 1) you avoid getting labelled as a loner and portrayed as a social person, which is generally perceived in this society as much better than nonsocial person, 2) you get to network and share info with others, which is often one of the best ways of reaching your goal.
I currently have no friends. Absolutely none. People who "act" to be my friends are only those who use me for homework, exam, etc. Most of what they say to me are like "What did you get on X?" "How do you do this problem, etc." I'm sick of these people. I heard that the only way to have a true friend is for you to be one first. But it seems that some people become true friends to each other even when they didn't try to be friends first, they just seem to naturally become friends.
I want to hear your opinions on why you have friends. Some of you might think this question is weird or trollish, but I'm NOT a troll. I also don't want any ppl accusing me of troll.

dude..these people who ask you for questions about school stuff, are they pre med? you should get involved in other stuff and trust me itll be easy to find people that are easier to hang out with. thats not saying you shouldnt be friends with other pre meds, because some of my closest friends are pre med (actually ALL of my closest friends are pre med..i think..) but diversify yourself, go do stuff you enjoy with a group of people that enjoy the same thing.

i have friends for the same reasons everyone else on here has pointed out...because i enjoy being around them, they are good people, supportive, have ambitious goals, will probably take my spot in med school BUT THATS OK because i want them to get in too 😀 sooo basically friends you should look for are people that are interested in you as a person, not your answers on a test or homework.

I think relationships are extremely valuable to ones well-being and mental, physical and spiritual growth.

GOOD friends are KEY...having bum friends who go to bars all day is worthless. Just HAVING friends is not enough, you need friends who will help you in times of need and be with you every step of the way - and to find people like this is not always easy! That's the truth!
