Me, too. That's basically double the pay for a similar mommy track job on the East Coast.

A good number of these great hourly rate jobs are available for multiple reasons:

-Lousy weather
-small town with lousy restaurants
-No high end grocery store.
-less educated populace
-small town politics
-several hours from decent size airport that you still need to make a connection to go anywhere.
-mediocre schools
-poor demographics that are worsening
-If you are married to city girl (or boy) who has no support system to where you are moving, there is a fair chance that your marriage won't survive or you will leave to save it or your partner will be on antidepressants.
oh, and lots of them are in flatland with few great outdoorsy type activities.

Not saying that it can't be done, but don't let high $$ and low cost of living blind you to the less visible costs.

You just described the home location of my medical school... Kirksville, MO.

What would it take to get you to move back there? How about raise your family there-assuming no local ties?

I'll never go back outside of graduation. I think it would honestly take, I don't know, maybe close to 7 figures, with lots of vacation time. It's just not an option to me. 3 hour drive from any real airport, and even those usually require a connecting flight to go anywhere. Plus all the other issues you describe are perfectly accurate.

ahahaha

if you know of a cheap place to live with a ton of theatre, museums & live music, a killer food scene and lots of young, secular, leftist, single women, i am so all ears.

Cleveland...

Truth. The downside is chipping ice off your car in the morning, risking your life to get to work, dead trees and the sun that never quite gets up there all winter.
Not perfect but risking your life getting to work is an exaggeration. Cleveland implies the greater Cleveland area, not the city itself...

I was half-kidding....though I remember sliding around here and there getting to school on ice covered I-90 and I-71.

But the music, food, and culture👍

So for the sake of argument:

If I wanted to take advantage of much higher take home pay in less desirable locations to the extreme and live like crap for a few years to really shore up my account, where would be the best place to do that?

I live in a part of the midwest where cost of living is pretty low, at least in terms of housing and everyday items (o.k. i may have just defined low cost of living)....

I think it's a matter of perspective. My city still has plenty to do, and while Dr's are not the only ones making any money, they do make up probably too high a % (I imagine) of people with some cash, I think. It's actually a very nice place to live. 45 min and 1 hr away from states largest two cities. A large university in town. Not a huge place, but big enough. Traffic is completely reasonable. Just made partner in August and I'm going to stay for the foreseeable future......

There is no perfect place too live and work. I think the key is having the cash (and time) to travel when you want to.
