why is d more stable than c

Just as the title asks...

I don't see why D is more stable. Because I see D have two close methyl group next to each other causing alot of steric repulsions. But C on the other hand even tho one group is axial most of the groups are equatorial thus having less steric repulsions.

You want the methyl groups on the equotorial side, it actually turns out the other way, if you put a methyl group in the axial possition, you create 1-3 interactions with the other methly
 
It isnt just a matter of the methyl groups, there are also hydrogens that are not represented that the axial position hinders with...

exactly, or simply because D is totally equatorial....
