Why is derm so appealing?

I thought health insurance doesn't cover most cosmetic procedures?

Yes, that's what they are saying. Most cosmetic procedures are paid out of pocket by the patient, so a doc is not dealing with the hassle that is the insurance companies and the like. The cash flows uninhibited from point A (patient's pocket) to point B (doc pocket). Insurance companies and medicare have the reputation of being slow to pay doctors for services rendered.

Patients are paying with cash, so no worries about the decreasing reimbursements in the health care reform.

It doesn't. That's why DrLove said dermatology a cash cow. When you deal with people who have cash on hand, you don't have to deal with health insurance.

Sorry, slow poster is slow. You beat me to it!

Exactly, if it doesn't cover it, then you don't have to deal with it, thus no hassles. 🙄

Ah. I guess I was just thinking out of pocket would mean less money, b/c obviously people aren't as loaded as big insurance firms.

This depends largely on where you practice. Trying to start a cash-only cosmetic practice in rural Nebraska? Not such a good idea. Trying to start a cash-only cosmetic practice in a rich suburb? Great idea.
