-ROCH3 belongs to electron donating group that destabilize the the structure of the molecule.

you should know that a good leaving group is the conjugated base of strong acid, which means it has to be a weak base.

thus, electron donating group has the properties to destabilize the structure of the molecule, making it unstable, in other words, it is a strong base.

CN is a strong nucleophile, b/c of its size and polarizability. Strong Bases and Nucleophiles are poor leaving groups.

For a question like this your textbook will have a better answer than any answer you find on SDN.....

disagree!

Really? So, you think the explanations thus far are good? Better than the one in your textbook?

What textbook are you using? If your serious about a killer ochem or gchem score you'll use the textbook extensively...
